Ranking all 32 quarterbacks

about 2 hours ago :: 23936 Views

Like all great sports arguments, this debate began at a bar, with a number of SI.com colleagues earlier this week. The challenge: rank the 32 projected starting quarterbacks. The criteria: how will they perform in 2007, factoring intangibles such as winning and leadership along with statistics. Marc Bulger may have better numbers than Tom Brady, but that doesn't make Bulger more valuable.
After No. 5, this gets very difficult, but if you disagree with any of my rankings, I'll gladly set you straight in a FanNation Throwdown at any time.
  1. Peyton Manning
  2. Tom Brady
  3. Carson Palmer
  4. Drew Brees
  5. Philip Rivers
  6. Donovan McNabb
  7. Ben Roethlisberger
  8. Marc Bulger
  9. Matt Hasselbeck
  10. Michael Vick
  11. Tony Romo
  12. Matt Leinart
  13. Jay Cutler
  14. Vince Young
  15. Brett Favre
  16. Steve McNair
  17. Alex Smith
  18. Jeff Garcia
  19. Jake Delhomme
  20. Chad Pennington
  21. Jon Kitna
  22. Eli Manning
  23. Damon Huard
  24. Trent Green (assuming he's a Dolphin)
  25. Jason Campbell
  26. Rex Grossman
  27. Byron Leftwich
  28. J.P. Losman
  29. Matt Schaub
  30. Josh McCown
  31. Tarvaris Jackson
  32. Charlie Frye
I would put Romo ahead of Mike Vick... Matt Leinart is rated too high.

I like pick #32. :D

I don't agree with Rivers @ #5. He is a good up and coming young QB but he hasn't done much last year to say he is that much better this year.

I also don't think Roethlisberger deserves to be #7 and Vick at #10 (that is if does play this season), especially with all the off the field distractions.

With where you've placed Roethisberger and Hasselbeck you must be completely ignoring the 2006 season -- you know, the one they just finished.

Pretty much, yes. Roethlisberger had a motorcycle wreck and an appendectomy. I dunno about you, but that would slow me down too. Hasselbeck's team did go further in the play offs than we did. IIRC, he was also hampered by an injury. Going into the 2007 season, the one they are about to start, this is how "I" would rank them. It's my opinion, nothing else.

I was basing it off the criteria listed.

I have to disagree. 2006 was the first year Rivers started and he was a Pro Bowl player. The point being that he should improve once the game starts to slow down for him. The kid is accurate and he makes good decisions. He is only going to get better.

Rothlesburger at 7? Come on. That ruins the whole list.

I like Jason Campbell ahead of Eli. That's funny.

I'd have Rivers and Romo closer together. Right around the 8 or 9 spot. Roethlisberger somewhere near 11-15. And I think Damon Huard needs to be MUCH higher than 23. He kept the Chiefs in the playoff race with something like a 6-2 record while Green recovered from his head injury and performed better than Green prior to and after his injury.

Big Ben and Vick are not the best at decision-making, on-field or off. Ben gets the boost for the past Super Bowl, Vick for the highlight potential.

All I did was post it, I like knowing how people rank our QB. I think 11 is okay being he only started 10 games. However Phillips Rivers at 5 is a joke not to mention Vick being 10.

Accuracy wise, he is ranked #14, which is just above average. He should improve but then so should lot of other QBs.

I believe Mcnabb, Carr, Burger, and Pennington is better him, noway I would rank him #5.

Peyton Manning - Easy choice.
Tom Brady - Way too high. Best QB =/= QB on best team.
Carson Palmer - About right.
Drew Brees - Can't complain.
Philip Rivers - Right spot, but not a lot of people would put him there. Props.
Donovan McNabb - Too low. Should be switched with Brady.
Ben Roethlisberger - Maybe a little but high, but he's young and has two terrific seasons out of three.
Marc Bulger - Way too low. Better than anyone but Manning and maybe Palmer and Brees last year, little reason to decline.
Matt Hasselbeck - Too high. Seattle is old and fading.
Michael Vick - Too high. Vick is only slighty above average. Maybe.
Tony Romo - A bit low.
Matt Leinart - If the criteria is 2007 success, his oline should knock him down 5 or more spots.
Jay Cutler - Too low. He is going to breakout.
Vince Young - About right.
Brett Favre - About right.
Steve McNair - A little high. Baltimore is going to fade.
Alex Smith - About right.
Jeff Garcia - Too high. Philadelphia is an excellent situation. Tampa, like Detroit and Cleveland, is not.
Jake Delhomme - Not really sure what to make of Delhomme.
Chad Pennington - A bit low.
Jon Kitna - Again, a bit low.
Eli Manning - Again, a bit low.
Damon Huard - About right.
Trent Green (assuming he's a Dolphin) - About right.
Jason Campbell - Way too low. Going to be the best QB from that draft.
Rex Grossman - About right.
Byron Leftwich - Too low.
J.P. Losman - Again, for 2007 success, he should be much higher. Lee Evans is good enough to make Losman look average.
Matt Schaub - About right.
Josh McCown - Should be last behind that line.
Tarvaris Jackson - About right.
Charlie Frye - About right.

If we're going off the performance we've seen on the field, Young should leap both Cutler and Leinart. If it's on potential I could see this, but Young was the first rookie QB from last season to "break out."

The criteria was 2007 success. I still think all three will be pretty good pro QBs, but for next year Cutler plays for a perennial playoff team in Denver while Leinart plays for the Cardinals and Young plays for the trainwreck known as the Tennessee Titans. We'll see.
