Cole Beasley And Why He's A Secret Star

A few weeks ago, our friends at Pro Football Focus made the argument that Cole Beasley was a “Secret Superstar” for the Dallas Cowboys last year. They argued that Beasley was one of the most effective slot players in the NFL in 2013, and I happen to agree with that assessment. Today we are going to look at a few plays from the season and why Beasley was so effective when used.

Take a look at the defense’s formation right before the snap of the ball. Look at how much space is given for the receivers to operate in when Cole Beasley is in the game.

Cole Beasley creates so much separation because he is so quick and it makes for an easy throw for Tony Romo in the middle of the field. This play is designed with Beasley as the number one option because he is too talented to lose to a fourth or fifth cornerback on a team. Whenever the Cowboys needed a few yards on third down and were going against a weak nickel corner, they ran a play similar to this and succeeded nearly every time. Here is another example of that:

YEA!
Another Beasely thread!

Have to admit, I'm really sick of all these Romo threads though.

But can never recall a player of Beasley's status--that being the teams 4th or 5th overall receiving option--always seeming to get threads in his honor.

He's fun to watch though.

Now here's a guy, that when he runs past the sticks and catches it, will get you a first down

Tongue n cheek?

On another topic...and I don't know the answer
I wonder if Romo had a better success rate throwing to Beasley or Dwayne Harris last year?

Well, Harris only had 14 passes thrown to him, so you can't read too much into his numbers. That said, Beasley's catch rate was 72% and Harris's was 64%. Beasley had a better ypc. They each had 2 TDs, but of course Harris did that with many fewer passes (but, again, such small numbers don't really tell you anything meaningful). Harris rates out better in FO's DVOA, mostly, I think, because Beasley had a fumble in there.

Thanks

I think they both had a good rate of 1st downs too. But again, Harris had few opportunities.
I wonder what Romo's passer rating was to each.

That's because he is the third option.

With Linehan taking over the reigns of OC I see a combination of Cole Beasley/Lance Dunbar/Ben Malena = Reggie Bush. A big part of Reggie's contribution last year was getting him the ball in space and letting him create. Granted, Beasley will have a role as a slot receiver, and we will likely see alot of the same from the above gif's, but with his quickness, I honestly believe he could do so much more.

I have to think Malena is likely on the practice squad. He's more of a change of pace back which is Dunbar's job and I just can't see them keeping two like that unless they keep 4 rbs.

I also think Josh Harris gets signed once the Cowboys can put Orton on DNR (did not report) or Lee on PUP.

You may be right...I only included him because he is the same type of player.

He's made me a believer.

I wouldn't say star but a really effective role player.

He represents the lollipop guild well.

I read the first two lines, and I was like, "What? Risen is actually optimistic about a player?" And then the lollipop crack - great way to maintain your status quo.

I'm surprised that nobody has signed Harris. I guess calling out his college coaches might have been a bad idea.

With 90 man rosters, there are 2880 players currently on NFL rosters. Something's wrong when a player with good game film and 4.45 forty with decent size (5-10, 206) is not one of them.
