I just rewatched the game this morning and that is exactly correct. Play action bootleg, the TE ran into Church and was blocking him. Church was using his hands to disengage.

True. But they would've called it if the ball was catchable. JMO

Just rewatched the game: On the play where Eli goes full brain fart mode and throws the pass out of the endzone, Collinsworth claims Church was mugging a Giants receiver and PI would have been called if Eli had thrown a catchable ball.

Don't think it would have mattered considering Eli was out of the pocket.

The receiver initially charged into Church like he was blocking for a running play. Church legally made contact with him, then held him (inside the numbers) and didn't let him get free.

If Eli had thrown the ball near him, PI would have been called.

I believe that anytime a QB leaves the pocket the DB is allowed to make contact with a receiver. Church made a heck of a play.

I remember this being the biggest thing my linebacker coach preached was as soon as the QB leaves the pocket you must HIT the receivers the second it happens. "Gotta fly like a bat out of hell" to destroy the WR

YES, it would have been a clear penalty, Church was mugging him beyond five yards

I was impressed by what Romo had said that Marinelli was expecting it. Instead of calling a run blitz and just selling out on the run down there, the safeties and CB were expecting the pass.

Collinsworth is a damn good analyst. He studies up, and knows the game.

If you heard Chris Simms this weekend.........ugh.

The TE engaged him as blocker, so Church took advantage and fought the block,,,
Yea, it never looked like the guy really ran a route.

But, had the ball been close, they probably could have thrown a flag.

People are misunderstanding the rules. When the QB is out of the pocket, there can be no illegal contact, so you can try to shove the receiver, get your hands on him, etc. UNTIL the ball is in the air. If Eli throws a catchable ball to the guy and while it's in the air Church is mugging the guy, it's pass interference regardless of how many yards downfield they are.

Collinsworth was just pointing out another thing Eli did wrong on that play basically. I mean, just in the last 3 plays of that drive, he tells his RB not to score, and then makes two mistakes on 3rd down, not either taking a sack or throwing a ball that would've gotten a PI call. It's pretty remarkable how bad Eli was there at the end of the game.

Oh, and he admitted he didn't know how many timeouts the Cowboys had as well. Oh, and he snapped the ball with a bunch of time left on the play clock when time was running too.

I think that Collinsworth is excellent. I really enjoy games that feature Collinsworth and Al Michaels.

Collingsworth is a good analyst, but he still got that wrong. The TE engaged our DB by blocking for the play action, the TE never took his hand off of the DB's shoulder pad even when trying to disengage, Eli left the pocket before they were 5 yards downfield, Eli didn't throw the ball in the same zip code as the TE. There is no way they should have called anything on that play. If he wanted the call Eli should have thrown it right at the TE, THEN it would have been pass interference.

The bolded is exactly what Collinsworth was saying.

However, for Eli to have thrown anything close to being considered catchable, he would have had to throw it right by about 3 Cowboys who were in the endzone between him and the TE. No way it's not tipped or picked off before it gets there. That would negate any PI.
