Clinton Portis will have earned $37.6 million from Daniel Snyder by the end of the 2008 season (though some of that money is deferred), and Washington's repeated reworking of his deals has irked some teammates, who feel he gets preferential treatment. During the past four years it was not uncommon for teammates to complain to coaches about what they perceived to be a double standard for Portis, sources said. "A lot of things Clinton does rub people the wrong way, but Joe Gibbs looked the other way on all of that," said one former member of the organization. -- Washington Post

If you aren't going to give your best player that sort of treatment then who gets it?

I don't know about the contract and money issues.

But this is not that big of a deal IMO.

Jimmy would give special treatment to some players. I imagine most teams do.

hey guys, I was listening to espn radio out here in the DC area and the john riggins show was on. They were discussing this very topic, ulitmately riggins and many of the skins players feel as if Portis' preferential treatment is not deserved. Meaning that, while he is a solid contributor - he is NOT as good as perceived. Now this was the opinion of riggins himself, he went on to say that portis isnt much better than ladell betts. He said there is a misconception of portis that he is this huge home run hitter - when in actuality he has never been since his first carry as a skins. ( which was a 60+ yard td run vs the TB Bucs. )

It was interesting listening to it and I just found it funny that they thought people who werent skins fans overrated him and then I see a few posts on this topic talking about how good of a player portis is. Now I am not saying that I dont think portis is a great player I am just passing along what was said on the show.

Well you have to distinguish between good players and good players for your team.

Think of the Skins. They have 2 skill players (not talking o-line) that are considered playmakers. Cooley and Portis. I am not saying Betts is bad but he does not get the recognition that Portis does, fair or not.

So naturally people are going to see Portis as one of their better players.

They need to keep Portis happy. He is their entire offense. They'd be up a creek if he left or held out.

Everyone knows that their QB is AWFUL. They'd be hosed running out there with their bottom-tier QC-clone without Portis to make some plays.

Contrast that with... say us. Romo is an excellent top-tier QB who could make do without a running game. But the Skins' QB can't do that and is just biding time before he goes to his next team to ride the pine.

I pretty much agree. You give a guy like Owens preferential treatment because of his production and his age. The same with Newman or even Ware and Witten. Giving Portis preferential treatment is like giving Marion Barber preferential treatment. I can see resting the guy from time to time, but too much more than that is overvaluing him.
