Joe Bendel, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports the Washington Commanders might have interest in restricted free agent CB Ike Taylor (Steelers). The Steelers offered Taylor a $1.55 million tender, meaning any team that signs him would have to give a first-round draft choice as compensation if the Steelers let him go.

Wow I know the 'Skins are stupid but if they give up a first for this guy I'll be laughing all the way until the draft.

do it. the skins are building a hell of a team for NEXT year but after that it should start eroding. then again, NO ONE IN HERE ever would have thought they could spend what they're spending.

Wonder how that would work since they don't have one.....

They'd probably have to give up their '07 first rounder for him instead.

That is not set in stone. Derrick Dockery has a first round tender as well.
The asking price can be negotiated like any other trade.

Yes, if they trade him. The RFA tender compensation isn't a trade.

They would be trading picks for a player. Maybe I worded it wrong.

No, remember Skins ended up getting Lloyd and only gave up 3rd this year & a pick next year. So Skins might feel they can also get Taylor the same way; Steelers have cap money but depends if they see Taylor as worth keeping & what they prepared to pay. Don't know Skins have available they can give up. Do they still have their 2nd?

the Skins traded for Lloyd, that's different than San Fran choosing not to match the offer

I'd rather them continually throw away their picks, since it's obvious they will never have cap problems. And the draft is how you win championships.

I know, but that assumes the Steelers are interested in trading him. If they just want to keep him at that RFA tender level, the Commanders will have to make a qualifying offer and the Steelers can choose to match it or not. If not, Commanders owe them a 1st round pick. That wouldn't be a trade.

It's a matter of semantics if you will.

The steelers may not want to trade, have no intentions of trading so in that aspect you are right.

However if they do not match then they get compensated by getting a draft pick.

Now compensation or trade, whatever you want to call it a draft pick and a player are traded to another team.

Semantics but it all boils down to a trade.

I'd be surprised if the Steelers let him go. According to all reports, Dick Lebeau loves Ike Taylor.

Which means the Skins ship off their 2nd round pick this year (the only pick they have left in the first 4 rounds), and about a 3rd rounder next year... can't see the Steelers settling for anything less...

Sounds like an awful lot for a player who wouldn't even start for them (barring injury)...

It is a lot to give up, but at the same time they have depth issues at the position. Ike could step right in and provide that depth, with proven talent at the NFL level.

It's still WAAAAY too much for a backup... and then, the Skins would have to work a new deal with Taylor (I assume the tender would come off the table in the event of a trade, but Ike would almost certainly want at least that much)...

So, a million and a half PLUS a 2nd this year, and a 3rd next year?? I know the Skins hate the draft with the intensity of a thousand suns, but still... :D
