The Washington Commanders are expected to pursue Baylor's Art Briles should they fire Mike Shanahan, according to league sources.

Not only are the strugging Commanders (3-10) losing, there also is a fractured relationship between coach Mike Shanahan and ownership. With Shanahan's partnership with quarterback Robert Griffin III also in peril, the club is likely to part with Shanahan, perhaps as soon as Monday. Once that happens, several league sources believe Baylor's Art Briles will be one of their targets.

Briles coached Griffin in college and maintains a strong connection with the QB and his family. While Briles recently agreed to an extension to remain at the school, it doesn't render a move to the NFL impossible. Briles proved uniquely able to handle Griffin's ego, unique playing style and health concerns while at Baylor, and also managed Griffin's parents and inner-circle, who have gone public at times -- voicing issues with Shanahan.

Shanahan, who has one year left on his contract, absorbed a 45-10 loss on Sunday at home, before a very sparse crowd at FedEx Field. Owner Daniel Snyder, who has a very strong relationship with Griffin, could have a difficult time finding his next head coach. Snyder's repeated failures with hires have devalued the job, leading to "by default" hires like Jim Zorn. And Griffin, viewed as the organization's prized asset, undoubtedly will have some voice in the process (Snyder has long empowered certain players well beyond the norm throughout his checkered NFL history).

Lol, yeah, that's worked out so well for them in the past with Spurrier. It's a good rumor mill foder for people that know nothing about the man. Until Washington DC relocates to Texas you won't get a 58 year old man to come hold his former player's hand in the NFL.

They are gonna hire a coach just because he coached their golden boy in college?

What about the other 52 guys on the roster.

God I Hope This Is True.

Not just coached, but "handled" his ego, his parents, and his entourage. Those seem like solid credentials to me.

If they get Briles, it would be a bigger mistake than firing Shanahan. He has zero NFL experience and I don't think it would be a good match at all. Art is a Texas guy, he likes to recruit and act as a father figure to his players. He is not a spring chicken either but not Monte old.

Aside from that, what message does it send to the rest of the team that the new HC was brought in to babysit their most prized possession? That could lead to even further player separations, envy/jealousy and more locker room problems, especially if he continues to stink it up.

Briles was a far larger threat to go to UT then to the Commanders.

If he wants an NFL job he'll end up with the Texans and he can caoch Case Keenum who was his neighbor growing up.

Strange post, did you read the article? And no big 12 coach is headed to DC, especially not one that has never ever been out of Texas more than a week a year for his entire life.

Only lol will be ten more years of people chasing Briles' Baylor Bears in the Big 12 standings.

I can't believe anyone could possibly think Briles is going to Washinton. Are people really this clueless?

Worn is the poster formerly known as dart and before that banned under a litany of other names, has a Baylor obsession.

I remain firmly convinced that anyone that thinks Briles would never leave Baylor is kidding themselves. Having said that, it won't be for an NFL job. AB is a college guy to the core.
