ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- No one is being watched more closely than Jason Campbell at this year's Washington Commanders training camp. The verdict after nine days? He's OK at playing quarterback, very good at playing coy. Campbell knew his every move would be scrutinized as never before in his first camp as starter in a football-mad city, but he's handled the frenzy with aplomb, dishing out a bit of back-at-ya humor on two off-the-field stories.

First, assistant coach Al Saunders revealed that he had Campbell enunciate "every play, every formation" during the offseason to help the quarterback improve his articulation. It seems that last year, when Campbell took over the starting job in midseason, some players had trouble understanding his Mississippi accent.

"We've got a shift that's called 'Falcon,"' receiver Antwaan Randle El said. "He used to say 'Balco.' 'Falcon' and 'Balco'? I don't know. But he's country. We teased him about it last year, but he's gotten better at it."

However, when asked about the diction lessons, Campbell would not give ground.

"Antwaan has little ears," Campbell said. "He's got to get some bigger ears so he can hear."

Asked how he hopes to improve communication in the huddle this year, Campbell said: "I told them -- just get used to my language."

Campbell was even more evasive when asked about the commercial he filmed for nfl.com's fantasy football game. In the ad, Campbell throws a football and then quickly throws another. The two balls collide in midair about 25 yards downfield, then miraculously land in the hands of two receivers.

It's a one-in-a-zillion moment. Trick photography had to be involved. No way it actually happened, right?

"It's an unsolved mystery," Campbell said with a smile. "I can't tell you one way or the other."

No matter how many times Campbell was asked, he wouldn't reveal how the stunt was staged -- or even whether it was a stunt.
"Just go home and try it in your backyard," he told reporters. "If you hit it, I'll give you 10 dollars."

Campbell's congeniality is also of little help in solving the biggest mystery of camp: How will he play in his first year as a starter?

Campbell was missing receivers regularly during the first few practices -- as if the pressure was getting to him -- but he rebounded with some good throws in the following sessions and has since spliced good moments with bad. No real trend has emerged, and anyone looking for one in Saturday's scrimmage against the Baltimore Ravens went home disappointed when coach Joe Gibbs decided to sit Campbell and most of the offensive starters during the 11-on-11 plays.

Campbell did take most of the 7-on-7 snaps, but most of his passes were short because the Ravens had Washington's receivers blanketed downfield.

Asked for an evaluation, Gibbs didn't have much of one to give.

"For Jason, it's about getting the right reads," the coach said. "He was checking down a bunch."

The first good chance to gauge Campbell's work comes Saturday when the Commanders visit Tennessee in their preseason opener. "We're happy with the progress," Campbell said. "But we're not satisfied."

So, they have to teach their QB how to talk now? :laugh2:

I bet the only player that can understand him is Sean "where my ATV's at" Taylor!

That story would make me very nervous about the QB position, if I were a Commanders fan. Spliced some good moments in there with the bad... geeez.

Say what you want, but Campbell has the right attitude. Nobody says a thing about Peyton Manning's accent. That's because he's a leader and a winner. Campbell is taking the right approach by telling them to get used to him.

And while that might be a laughing point, I'm sure there's some laughing coming our way considering we had a guy eat a cricket over the weekend.

No kidding!

It wasn't really the accent part I'm talking about... heck, I've lived in Mississippi for years now. I'm sure some folks would have a hard time understanding me. :)

No, I was talking about this part of the story: "Campbell was missing receivers regularly during the first few practices -- as if the pressure was getting to him -- but he rebounded with some good throws in the following sessions and has since spliced good moments with bad."

I assumed from the thread title and 5stars response that's what they were referring to. I'm from Texas and while I don't have a strong accent, call me sensitive to my fellow southern brother. :)

Sounds like a young QB to me. Gonna have some good moments mixed in with primarily bad moments.

Yeah, I get jokes too when I go on business trips to like California and places like that.

I can't win for losing actually. When I'm here in MS, people tell me I sound like a yankee... when I'm up North, people say I sound like a hillbilly.:

Not according to most Washington fans. Nope. Campbell is going to be incredible this year and make Romo look like garbage. They completely discount articles like the one above.

One thought came to mind as I read that.........Quincy Carter II
Lets hope he doesn't have any bad habits that would keep him from hanging on to the job and the Commanders mired in mediocrity.

I don't trust any of you guys!

Naaa, a lot of folks on here have known since Katrina that I live in South Mississippi, but not everyone I suppose. I live in Hattiesburg, home of the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. I graduated from there.

Yes, I actually went to college with Brett Favre while he was here. He's the whimpiest member of the family... some tough people, those Favres. His sister was arrested in a drive by shooting.

I played intramural football with his brother, who could sling the damn ball a mile.

I've heard many stories about his college days where the team had to dumb down the O becauae saying the kid isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer would be an understatement. Saying he's "country" is a kind way of saying his IQ isn't what you'd like at his possition. Not saying he can't or won't become a good QB, but a lot of people around his college program knew he wasn't very sharp.

I'm not saying it's not true (personally, I hope it is)... but where did you hear those stories? Do you know someone who went to Auburn at the same time he did? I'm just wondering because if that's a credible place that you're hearing it from... it's probably true... and it would be great news for Commander rivals like us.

I have some realtives that live in Hattiesburg so I'm told..... (my folks dragged me down there in the late 70's for a family reunion.) I live in the extreme north part of the state on the MS - TN line. Ask Yeag... he's been there!:laugh2:

Poor Commanders. Trying to rely on that spare they traded up for... a typical crappy personnel move by a spare organization.

All their hopes ride on the clean equivalent of Quincy Carter.

Methinks their best hope to make it back to the Super Bowl is to pray for a strike-shortened season.

Yeah they had to dumb down the offense for the SEC Offensive player of the year. Nothing wrong with hating on the Commanders, but if your going to try to show off your "knowledge" at least make sure its backed up by facts.
