Commanders | Looking to Improve the Run
Mon, 8 Aug 2005 02:25:14 -0700
Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Commanders RB Clinton Portis has bulked up to 212 pounds after playing last season in the 205 pound range. The Commanders, looking to run the ball more effectively this year, have worked to tailor the offense around Portis more, adding outside the tackle and parameter running plays. Portis said he cannot be the 250-pound sledgehammer between the tackles the team is looking for and they realize he is a different back, forcing them to adjust. Portis, who wants to run for 1,500 yards this year, said the team is opening up their system. The team hopes a stronger passing attack, with more speed at receiver and multi-receiver sets, will force defenses from keying solely on Portis. Furthermore, the Commanders will have Portis stationed a few yards deeper in the backfield on most formations than he was previously; this should allow him to gain extra momentum, see holes develop and allow intricate blocking patters to develop.
