First off, im suprised I actually like this coach so far. I really thought it was the most garbage lazy hire possible. Hes brought in what seems to be a great staff and I think players will play hard for him. Schotty seems to be a good ceo type of coach. This will be a make or break year for him.

As far as the draft goes I'm glad hes involved while simultaneously cringing because weve had coaches selections go really bad in the past.

Yeah, we purely need a starting inside linebacker. We purely need a pass rusher. We purely need a third starting DL if using a 3-4 set.

I feel pretty good about our defensive additions. The biggest difference would be adding a LB. I think if we did that we could get a couple impact players in round 1 and probably have 6 or 7 new starters.

I like Thompson the most. Durant and Locke are solid additions.

But we have no pass rush. Gary is a rotational piece. As you pointed out, there is a gigantic hole at LBer as well.

Of course they over promised and under delivered. I think Gary will be solid though. I agree you shouldn't count on rookies to contribute, but I also believe first round picks should typically start and contribute right out of the gate.

I think we need to contextualize Gary.

He is just a 1-1, system dependent replacement for Clowney. He's a pretty good player but he doesn't really move the needle for what this defense can be.

I wonder how much people's opinions change about Gary if we bring back Clowney or add a first round pass rusher?

I agree hes pretty good, but his biggest fault seems to be replacing Clowney who was pretty equivalent last season. Although, we should acknowledge Clowney is definitely getting older and a drop off is coming sometime in the next year or two.

I view Gary as a nice piece to what could be a really balanced line. We dont have an elite pass rusher, but if everyone is capable of 7-10 sacks a season we have something.
