Competition committee wants TDs in OT

The NFL's transformation into a field-goal league led the competition committee to suggest a modification in the overtime format, co-chair Rich McKay said.

``The numbers have changed pretty dramatically,'' McKay said during a conference call.

From 1974-93, there were 201 regular-season overtime games. The team that won the overtime coin flip scored on its first try to win in 51 of the games for a 25.4 percent success rate. The winning points were scored by touchdown in 15 games and by field goal in 36 games.

From 1994-2009, there were 244 regular-season overtime games. The team that won the overtime coin filp scored on its first try to win in 84 of the games for a 34.4 percent success rate. The winning points were scored by touchdown in 20 games and by field goal in 64 games.

The Cowboys have gone to overtime in 15 games since 1994. In that span, they are 4-6 in OT games decided by a field goal and 3-2 in OT games decided by a touchdown.

The committee proposal, to be used only in postseason games, calls for a first-possession touchdown to win an overtime game but a field-goal to give only a three-point advantage. If the first-possessison team scores on a field goal, the opponent would get one series to match or win on a touchdown.

``The pros (are trying) to rebalance the advantage that's been gained since '94 based on field goal accuracy being greatly improved, field position being improved,'' said McKay, president of the Atlanta Falcons. ``There are advocates who will say that we're trying to put in a system that emphasizes more skill and more strategy in overtime as opposed to the randomness of the coin flip.

``Those on the other side will tell you it works pretty well, it's exciting, and there's an opportunity for less plays, and that is an important product that's needed in overtime. ''

Owners will consider the suggestion at next week's league meetings in Orlando, Fla.

I wish they would just leave it alone. If your defense isn't good enough to stop the other team on the first possession of OT then that's your fault and you deserve to lose.

I think the revision sounds like a good idea.

I think the current format stinks.

Agreed. I would never support a proposal that guarantees each team an offensive possession. The only silver lining is that this is for the playoffs only.

sorry but it isn't fair to the other team that their offense never gets a chance.

Who says the other defense could stop them?

That's about the stupidest reason not to change it I have heard.

I'm thinking McKay is the evil/shortsighted/stupid one. He's the one who was in charge a few years ago when they purposely made illegal contact and pass interference calls more prevalent to increase scoring.

This is so stupid. Leave the game alone, guys. It was great long before you got here and it doesn't need you to constantly "improve" it.

Blame the Brett Favre toadies. They're outraged that the hillbilly didn't have a chance to take the field after the Saints' FG in OT. Boo hoo.

Print this out and forward it to Roger Goodell.

I don't like having different rules for the regular season and playoffs.

Yeah, pretty much. Also, wont all this tweaking result in more ties? Also, do people want a noon game going to 4:00 while they're going back and forth trying to get OT over with?

Well, if its just the playoffs than my post doesnt matter....but i still dont like it in the playoffs either. Maybe some team that didnt make the playoffs because of an OT loss that they may have won with the playoff rules. Its dumb.

There are two teams who couldn't get it done in regular time.

Not just the ones who won the coin toss.

Just play a freaking full overtime period. Screw the networks. Screw injuries. I can't stand the rationale that the goal of overtime is to just get the game over with. Man up, suck it up and play another 7:30 mins of football. If still tied, play another 7:30 and so on and so on. Screw all these pansy rules you need a lawyer to interpret. Screw it all. :(

I think it's a great idea. Give both teams a chance. It will make the game that much more exciting.

OT is the one area in which I do enjoy the college game more than the pros although this isn't an exact mimic of the college rules.

What could be more exciting than sudden death?

Make it simple. The first team to score a touchdown in OT wins.

So if a team is driving and faces 4h and goal, their option is to go for it (for a first down or TD), or punt it away and play the field-position game.

Hostile, you'll love this, because this basically tells all kickers to hit the showers after 4 quarters.
