The NFL on Monday suspended Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson without pay for the first eight games of the regular season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=3492

Ive seen some people talking about how he wouldnt start serving his suspension without a contract when this is clearly not the case. He is out for the first 8 weeks and then is available to play the following week.

If we need help at DT by then i say we sign him but if Remi and Ratliff are working out go ahead and pass.

It certainly is a possibility, but you can bet come week 5-6 there will be alot of teams looking at him, especially teams who have put someone on IR and need to fill that roster spot.

If Spears sucks that badly that we try to trade him and pick up T. Johnson, for a really cheap price, I would hope the cowboys would try to get him.

Did this really need another thread Fuzzy?

The problem with this is that we'd have to sign him now. His suspension wouldn't start until AFTER he's signed. We won't have the luxury of knowing whether Ratliff, Remi, or Ayodele are capable of getting it done. At least that's the gist I've been getting.

Pass.

NT Remi Ayodele has cleared waivers after being cut by the Falcons over the weekend thereby making him available to be resigned by the Cowboys...I think this is the move they make and not Tank...He showed a little something in preaseason but Wade likely didn't want to go 3 deep at NT.

Tank just seems like too much of a gamble and wouldn't be available for a long time anyway.

When your a mod then spout about what can or cannot be posted. Until that day let them do their job and if you dont like a thread PM them or just stay out of it.

There was no post on the front page about our DT situation or about a possible pick up.

people were spreading misinformation concerning this yesterday so i felt the lack of the subject on the main page and the fact that the correct information should be brought to life was prudent.

If Ratliff and Remi are not getting it doen i feel very strongly that Johnson could help us. The guy can play and we have one of the leagues best off the field conduct programs headed by Calvin Hill.

Noone is going to pick up Johnson until after week 8 anyway and that should give us plenty of time to determine whether our DTs can get it done.

My point is that people were acting like we would have to sign him now and then wait 8 weeks after to use him and that is not the case whatsoever.

fuzzy -
1. old article.
2. this would assume he serves the suspension while a bear
3. he's not a bear, or on any other team - so - he can't serve a suspension until he is a member of a team

a team picks him up, he's useless for 8 weeks. period. if he screws up in that 8 weeks (gee, what *are* the odds) he's likely to be gone even longer.

it's amazing the bind some people are willing to let themselves get into when trying to fix a problem. i know a lot of people who will take flyers and chances in their own life and when it doesn't pan out, blame life for sucking.

not blame their own inate desire to put themselves into a sucky situation.

pass on the tank and hopefully this will die soon as an option.

Oh and tomson do you have any proof that the suspension doesnt start until he gets a contract?

I have a quote that says specifically the first 8 games of this season.

Do you have one shred of proof that this is the case? Do you have any shred of proof that the article was incorrect in stating the first 8 games of the 2008 season?

The article WAS correct AT THAT TIME. At the time he was a member of the Bears and would have been suspended for the first 8 games.

The suspension does not start until he is a member of the team. As of right now he is not an NFL player so how can he be suspended from NFL games?

and that quote i'm sure is based upon him still being a bear. now find one that says so *after* he was cut.

you go quote digging if it's that important to you.

im looking in the CBA and am finding nothing concerning how suspensions are handled. And the language is very clear is stating the first 8 games of the season. Isee zero evidence that it would require him to be under contract.

He has NOT served a game suspension yet. Still owes the NFL 8 games. The team that signs him has to then give him up for 8 games.

Oops, I see that others have already pointed that out. My bad.

Oh, and as it regards proof of that, that is standard NFL policy. Think about it. Plenty of stuff about how Quincy Carter would have to serve 4 games if a team picked him up. That has been around this forum since 2005. Why would things change for Tank?

Similarly, until you're a mod, you can't decide what I can and can't say on this forum...and by no means do I have to be a mod to suggest that this didnt' need its own thread. It was just an opinion. It was a simple question...one that I thought you'd be able to answer with a simple search, or at the very least, without getting your panties in a bunch.

So what is the misinformation here? Do you know the bold part definitively?

Can he be signed after week 8 and then play week 9?

...or do we have to sign him now in order to see him serve his suspension, and then have him contribute?

Sometimes its just better to listen when everyone says you are wrong, because usually you are

Fuzzy was wrong, and his article did not say what you are implying
