Ahhhhhh. It's so easier to accept reality from the middle. While my buddy was spontaneously combusting just across the table from me at the watering hole yesterday I couldn't find the energy or where with all to do the same. Perhaps it's the history of coming up short when it matters most. Perhaps it's the years of accepting mediocrity. Perhaps it's the fully developed environment that fosters just doing enough to get by. Whatever the cause, I don't feel anything after witnessing yesterday's showing amidst an absolutely huge game. I'll be eternally grateful when we finally allow Mr. Ho Hum to go back to his scheduled grazing appointments at the local donut shop. Yet I digress...
So let me get to the meat of it. I had some thoughts running through my head and thought I would pass them along. I'll just run down what I feel marks a contender versus the opposite end of the spectrum. (from a team perspective)
A contender steps up to meet the challenge that comes every year at the same time when teams are slotting themselves for the playoffs.
A pretender steps forward with no understanding of what it takes to make a difference. Thereby maintaining a horizontal track.
A contender makes its players accountable and creates an environment that encourages frequently raising the the bar.
A pretender takes a ho hum approach; often consoling players for less than desirable results.
A contender utilizes talent appropriately and successfully creates elaborate schemes designed at keeping opposing defenses off balance.
A pretender runs the freaking delayed draw 12,000 times per game while only placing Choice in the game in obvious running situations and then wonders why their run plays always get snuffed out.
A contender develops a knack for winning big games.
A pretender watches contenders win big games.
A contender recognizes that a team cannot live and die with one guy alone and makes necessary adjustments to diversify the source of production.
A pretender stands idle and does absolutely nothing to effect positive change.
A contender is always in control of the situation and prepared for emerging issues.
A pretender is dumbfounded that things didn't quite work out as planned.
Where do you feel we fit into the equation right now?
Disclaimer: These are just my mindless thoughts that I had to put down somewhere.
