Whose contracts expire after this year? Shouldn’t we be using some of the $12+ million in cap space this year to secure some of these players? The following are some of the starters I can think of whose contract expires after this year:

1. Tony Romo
2. Julius Jones
3. Flozell Adams
4. Mark Colombo
5. Terrance Newman
6. Ken Hamlin
7. Patrick Crayton?

Anyone else? I'm all for Jerry not spending money like the Commanders on washed up players, but we have plenty of cap space this year that won't carry over in the future.

1. Sign Romo after he plays his 1st below-average game this season (Chicago?)
2. Bye Bye Juice.
3. If Flozell continues to play like he did Sunday night, lock him up to a 4 year deal b/c offensive linemen reach their peak in their 30's.
4. See #3 for Colombo.
5. Newman will be signed next offseason.
6. Jury is still out.
7. I think Crayton is a RFA? Offer him a fair deal to stay in Dallas. This guy has been so consistent. If another team makes an offer, match it!
8. Marion Barber is also a RFA so I wouldn't be surprised if he's signed long-term during THIS season.

I believe the Romo deal will get done after our season is over, hopefully after the Superbowl...:wink2:

Newman's contract will get addressed after 2008.

Flozell Adams might be a victim of a younger player like Doug Free replacing him...

Julius Jones is history.

Crayton MIGHT get a solid offer from Dallas.

he was an RFA this past offseason, he'll be a UFA this coming one

That trade down for Julius and the extra #1 is looking pretty dumb.

Resign #'s 1, 4, 5

Evaluate #'s 6, 7 after the season and see what their contributions and future are.

Let #'s 2 and 3 walk unless they do something unexpected and amazing.

Obviously Newman and Romo have first priority.

Re-signing Crayton will depend on whether he clearly shows he's a #2 WR. If not and if Hurd can replace him, we won't re-sign Crayton.

Could wait on re-signing Colombo until end of his contract in 08 if we still have doubts or, if he looking good, could re-sign end of this year.

Re-signing Adams is up in the air & hinges in large part on how Free develops this year. Keeping Adams around 2-3 years more could be a good idea to give Free even more time to develop as our future starting LT but how much money must we spend to keep Adams.

Depends if Julius Jones has a great year, whether we can draft McFadden & if not who we'd rather have. We probably won't bring Jones back.

Hamlin decision waits until end of season so we can really evaluate his play.

From what I remember:

Tony Romo
Chris Canty (I think he can void 2008)
Tyson Thompson
Marion Barber
Julius Jones
Flozell Adams
Ken Hamlin
Patrick Crayton
Keith Davis
Jay Ratliff
Jacques Reeves
Nathan Jones

Thompson might be an exclusive rights free agent, not a RFA, I'm not sure.

edit: Oglesby will be a RFA.

Where do people get the idea that cap space doesn't get carried over in the future?

If the team has $12 million in cap space this year and they don't spend it, they'll still have that $12 million next year.

The only way this remotely makes any sense is to redo a deal during the season and use the LTBE loophole which could give the team a cap credit in the following year. That should definitely be done with Romo.

Flo and Julius will likely walk. I'd be surprised if Crayton is re-signed as well. Someone will offer him more money to be a #2 somewhere.

I think Colombo still has a year left. Think he signed a two year deal.

Why?

It's well documented we were not going to take Stephen Jackson if we had kept the pick if that is where you are going with that comment.

So I am curious about your comment.

I see Dallas locking up Romo and Tnew.

After that it is wide open.

If Glenn retires I expect Crayton will come back as starter next season, this is his audition right now, so far so good.

What if there are a bunch of contracts with escalating salaries? The cap could be 12$ million one year and then less the next because those players salaries go up or they get bonuses. It could happen. The cap is very fluid.
