Convince me the fade pattern is good

We saw it a couple more times in Pitt and they both failed. Not sure what the success rate is for the Cowboys, but it has to be poor at best.

Here are the reasons I hate this play with a passion:

1. Overall, it's a low percentage play at best.
2. It takes a perfect throw from the QB. It's not really one of Daks best throws so far in his short career.
3. There is almost 100% chance the WR is well covered.
4. It's a jump ball type play by design, which automatically makes it a 50-50 chance it will work even if things go well with the throw and route.
5. It's a pre-snap commitment. They either have to commit to it pre-snap or not. Once they commit to it, all other options are off the table. We saw this on the first try in the Pitt game. Once they committed to it, the 3 wr's on the opposite side pretty much just stood there after the snap. Go watch the replay. It is kind of comical the way the WR and DB are just standing around having a tea party during the play.
6. Don't get me wrong, I like Dez and what he can give the team, but he's too inconsistent with the tougher catches. In my opinion, the fade is a tough catch almost every time.

I am sure there are more reasons, but given the poor success rate of this play over the years in Dallas, I just don't know why it is attempted anymore.

I hate it, I hate it , I hate it. Can someone convince me why I shouldn't?

Well I think the hope is yo get Dak to improve with it.

Dez and Romo weren't always on the same page but when they did? Goodness. That fade route to Dez is unstoppable. No one can stop it without interference. Most teams have problems with it. The Commanders must've ran it about 20 times against us with Doctson.

It needs to improve and it will.

It's funny because I think in preseason it was one of Dez'S first td catches from Dak and it was a beauty.

the only reason that matters is this: the defense knows its coming every time

I hate it and have always hated it, especially on 3rd downs.

It's a low risk pass to the outside without the chance there being any other defenders in play & if it's a poor pass, Dez has the ability to defend it. Low risk pass for a QB that doesn't throw in the middle much in the rz.

By design the defense doesn't know it's coming every time. If the defenders plays off anticipating it then the quick slant will be a sure TD.

The play isnt the problem. Its the execution that hasn't been there.

And to the OP it's not a 50-50 play unless the defender is willing to just let you score on the slant. If defenses are sitting on this play then it's up to the coaches to make them guess by calling a quick slant option.

Also if the play is thrown back shoulder like it's designed then it's absolutely not a 50-50 ball.

I agree it's low risk play, but when it's a low success rate, what's the point?

With Romo, it a strength to Dez. Dak, not so much.

My guess is that it is looking good in practice but not translating to the game.
I could be wrong, but even with Romo and Dez and don't recall it being very successful at all.

On the one occasion it was wide open (designed as a back shoulder throw, not a fade). If Dak puts it anywhere near the pylon, it's a pitch and catch. He had at least 2 yards of space to work with.

Dak just needs to be more accurate with the throw. Hopefully that comes with time, and is likely correctable with better footwork. If that's his biggest problem, we're in really good shape. Think of some other QBs in the league that have played for years and their fan bases want run out of town.

When did the fade pattern become a staple for almost every team inside the red zone? I see it now at every level from so many teams. Never cared for how much it's ran. It's not a high percentage play. Although, it's a safer pass near the endzone since it has a lower percentage of being picked off in traffic.

Dez has made a living on that play.

He's probably one of the best there has ever been at that play.

It's the QB who needs to get better at this.

I won't try to convince you that it's a good play but it IS a good play when it's going to Dez.

What I'd prefer inside the 5, is an option look.
A jump ball should be one of 3 or 4 options, including QB run.

Read option, roll right, throw slant, cross, or jump to Escobar, or QB keeper. 5 options there.

Some of these wrinkles are designed for the postseason, situations when a TD is mandatory.

The jump ball to Dez when he's 1 on 1 is a good play because Dez can win that matchup most of the time if the ball is thrown well. Problem is, Dak hasn't thrown a good ball on that play yet. Romo is pretty good at it, but it takes work and practice to nail. At least right now, I wouldn't run it as often as they are because Dak's just not throwing it well yet.

Dak and Dez simply aren't on the same page yet like Romo and Dez are. Eventually they will figure it out.

The problem is that Dak tries to fire bullets in there when the ball is meant to have air under it and be high.

It's funny that his fade throws have so much velocity. Especially with how weak some of his other throws have been. He got lucky with a few passes against the Steelers because they hung in the air for an eternity.

It is a tough to defend play if your qb can make the throw. Dak can't yet but hopefully he will get there some day
