Cooper is a FA, but heard he likes it at Dallas and he would cost a lot less than Leary...
I'm all for bringing Cooper back if he can play. We never really got a chance to see much while he was here. With him he bouncing around the league, I'm a little skeptical though. At the very least, he could be a backup. This might be a good place for him.

I just hope if they re-sign Cooper that they experiment a lot in mini and training camp with LG and RT combos and pick the best and not just settle for Collins and Free

We on The Zone often exaggerate the bad play of some players. I really don't think that's the case with Free. He likely only gets worse. He can be a backup possibly. Green should beat him out. He's bound to stay healthy once. Right?

I dont know. Was it his back? And then something else? Let's hope he can dress for 1/2 the games next year.

He's a little short for RT. I think he's only like 6'2
Exactly this.

Collins was top 10 on some team's boards as a tackle, before the incident. I have no doubt Collins would succeed at right tackle for us.

Cooper has always been a favorite of mine but he'll need to show a lot to go from guy who was cut by the Patriots and Browns in the same year to starting member of the greatest offensive line in football. He needs to be a better left guard than either Doug Free and Chaz Green are at right tackle before the team would consider moving Collins to right tackle.

I'm rooting for Cooper though. He was extremely impressive at UNC.

I am all for keeping Leary since we can easily create lots of cap space and currently have $60mil space for 2018

But the question here is RT - with Free giving up almost the most sacks for RT last year.

Some of us have been thinking about Collins for RT since he was signed.

How about trying Cooper for RT?
He is supposed to be extremely athletic for a guard.
He actually runs a slightly faster 40 than Collins.
He is also supposed to be a little light in the base for a guard.
Both problems kind of sound like Collins?
If Collins gets considered, why not Cooper?
Collins ok Cooper a FA and size wouldn't help on the outside I believe he's got short arms.

This is wrong. We are currently over the cap, this despite only having about 32 players under contract.

While we can clear money by kicking the can...we will need money to sign twenty players!

We won't keep Leary. We won't be signing big-ticket free agents. This forum gets maddeningly silly sometimes with a failure to either apprehend or acknowledge basic realities.

This is wrong.

How so, the cap guy said $30 million could easily be created and $50 million could even be done for this year.
Many have said there is $60 million in cap space for next year.
Which part do you disagree with?

The "cap guy" LOL.

Let's suppose we defer $30 mil in cap allotments...and save $5 mil on cap space by moving on from Romo.

That money must cover our rookie pool, and all veteran contracts. The team needs to add twenty players...and that means 20 contracts.

Do the math. We won't be adding any elite free agents....and Leary is a luxury we can't afford.

When we lose Tony without a June 1 cut, we'll have over 60 million in space for 2018. That's a fact.

There is no "kicking the can down the road" at this point. It's almost always smarter to restructure the same amount of money given the cap increasing every year.

I've done the math and so have several others. We won't keep Leary because there's no point, but we can add any FA we wanted, or two mid level free agents and be fine, with no risk to lose out on signing any young guys in the immediate future.

@bkight13
there has been numerous threads on it.
I did the math and we could easily add 3 prime FAs if he FO wants to.
with the $60 mil in space next year, this game can easily last 4-5 years.
assuming leary gets $8M average, first year is only $1M.

Free is free to go, but I'd like to stockpile all the other OL we're ready for a run.

If Free is so bad why do the people that see him and coach him everyday keep him around?
I haven't seen anyone that fires me up replacing Free.
Cooper has to develop his skills and confidence back. Collins replaces Leary that has been stated.
Because he has always been competent and steady. Not All Pro but no team can have all All Pros. There must be some workers too.
