“@nickeatman: Working on the specifics but Phil Costa has signed an extension to avoid restricted free agency.”

Hmm, not sure how I feel except I hope it means we are investing a guard or tackle. FA or Draft..

It's scary how bad we are at evaluating talent.

I'd literally take a cap hit just to get him off the roster.

I'm assuming this means the Cowboys think Costa's back injury/stiffness, etc are not an issue.

Phil Costa and Nate Livings are perfectly acceptable number four and number five players on an NFL offensive line.

It is now up to Tyron Smith and the coaching staff to upgrade him from an okay LT to a Pro Bowl LT. And for our front office to find big upgrades from Bernie and Free.

Or maybe it's a "cheap" contact relative to a restrictive FA cap amount?

strange.

if he can shake the injury bug he is at the very least an above average backup.

why would you take a cap hit to get rid of a decent backup?

I'm sure it is cheap but it doesn't matter to me. He should be off the roster. He provides absolutely nothing of value and has no upside.

Why would you put your opinion that he's a decent backup on me and ask me why I would want to get rid of a decent backup?

I obviously don't believe he's a decent backup.

It is interesting that we decide to extend our second injured former UDFA in Costa as we have already done it with Church.

Our two weakest position groups on the team get more money with questionable futures......guess they like to roll the dice.

CHAM.......PION.......SHIP?.....:eek::

We'll see I guess. He looked good in his brief appearance last year, but the health of his back/overall performance the past two years/physical limitations make even the most optimistic fan unsure if this is a good thing. With two good guards around him, he might be ok. I'd rather have the guy on the roster as a back-up if anything. Hopefully, we'll draft/sign a couple of guys and have Costa compete for his job.

It's a 2 year deal, and his 2013 cap hit is less than it would have been if he were a RFA (1.3M). Perfectly acceptable contract.

he didnt go to IR with a back injury. His back was fine. He suffered a dislocated ankle that cost him his season.

This is true but his back was a significant issue that cost him quite a bit of time this past season. Backs are typically not like broken bones which heal and are no longer an issue. Back problems are frequently chronic and tricky to treat.

no doubt.

They gave him the time he needed though and from everything i remember were really cautious and said his back was fine in october when he returned after the bye week.

Just caught an unlucky break with his ankle..

Yep. I just wish the guy wasn't physically limited (size-wise). By all accounts, he is a smart, strong, hard-working guy. Everyone loves those qualities. Unfortunately, there will be times when he is just physically overmatched which can really compromise the offense.
