The reports of his demise were premature according to ESPN Dallas:

The Cowboys attempted to get center Phil Costa to take a pay cut but he has refused. Despite reports, the Cowboys have not yet decided to release Costa, but that move would save them $1.5 million.

With the restructures of Romo, Scandrick, Lee. We are about $1 million over. Just cut Costa if he refuses, be under the cap. Get it over with.
This can buy some time on the decision of Ware, rather to release or restructure, take pay cut, or what ever.

Also can save on the decision on Austin. Which I still won't rule out him taking a pay cut and staying. But he should be the June 1st cut.
There are a few other option too like Durant, that and costa, gets us under the cap, and with a few oter moves, possibly Orton. That frees up some room to sign a few FA's for depth.

Strange, a lot of news sources already have him down as released. It's kind of pathetic we'd go to a guy making 1.5m and ask him to take a pay cut though.

Yes he is. I seen a 19 page thread on here about it. I think someone said he was joining the WWE as Hacksaw Jim Duggins son or something.

Two veteran starting centers recently re-signed to their teams for that same 1.5 million. So the market seems to be low right now.

I'm fine with the market. Not fine with the desperation on our part. 1.5 seems like a reasonable amount for a young, veteran backup. Talking about searching the cushions for change.

I want to see Costa agree to a pay reduction to stay on the team. He's a quality backup. He's much improved over his early struggles. If he's cut, he'll likely end up on another team playing for somewhat more than the league minimum. It makes sense for him to make about that here and stay on the team. The haters completely ignore his improvement and his good work ethic.

Dudes chick dumped him and now he's gonna take a financial dump all in a 1 year span.

As we stand we are $750,000 over the cap.

Miles will be used as a post June 1 cut to sign this years draft class and some left over $ for fillers as we need them.

And the lovers completely ignore he could not even be counted on as a viable solution as a guard in a pinch. Free was looked at to move inside in a disaster because he was not considered good enough to play right guard. If he could play both positions well enough to have the team confident to use him, then I could see why we would continually bother keeping him.

This much is true. Costa is a true Center only, and any OG he might play would only be in a pinch. However much he did or didn't improve through the course of 2011 and into 2012, he didn't grow longer arms or become a viable medium-term option at OG.

The Dallas Cowboys agreed to release backup center Phil Costa on Friday, according to a source.

The release of Costa saves the Cowboys $1.5 million and will officially get the Cowboys below the league’s 2014 salary cap of $133 million.

Costa refused to take a pay cut and was set to be released a week ago before the Cowboys began to “re-think” the release once the league announced that the salary cap would be $10 million more this year than in 2013. Ultimately, the Cowboys agreed it was better to part ways with Costa.

More later …
