Keyshawn Johnson, the ex-Jet who got a $3 million per year contract offer from the Giants last March, is available again after getting cut by the Carolina Panthers today. But I wouldn’t bet on him getting another offer from the Giants.
The Giants may give him a call -- in fact, Tom Coughlin indicated they’ll at least explore the possibility in an interview this afternoon on Sirius NFL radio -- but the truth is, the Giants now have plenty of receivers after they used a second-round pick on USC’s Steve Smith on Sunday. They are also convinced that Amani Toomer will be healthy come September, and they obviously have Plaxico Burress and last year’s second-rounder Sinorice Moss.
Johnson would’ve been a much better fit when they were looking for a No. 3 receiver to replace Tim Carter. Either Smith or Moss are expected to fill that role this year.
Still, never say never. And Coughlin didn’t on Sirius’ “The Afternoon Blitz” today when he was asked if Keyshawn “could be on the Giants radar.”
“Well, let’s put it this way,” Coughlin said. “We study every player that’s available and we’ll do that again in light of the fact that Keyshawn is available. We weren’t necessarily thinking that he would be. Of course we made a move in the draft to help solidify that position as well so we’ll take a look at that like we do everything else but beyond that I really can’t comment just yet.”
Various team sources say a pursuit of Johnson is not likely, though none would completely rule it out.
Johnson, by the way, will turn 35 in July. Amazingly, he’s had at least 70 catches in 11 of his 12 NFL seasons -- the lone exception being 2003 when he was suspended for six games by Tampa Bay. He’s just a year removed from signing a four-year, $14 million contract with the Carolina Panthers that included a $5 million signing bonus -- far more than the Giants were willing to pay.

Condolences to Giants GM Jerry Reese and his entire family after his grandmother, Earlene Taylor, passed away late Sunday as her grandson was finishing up his first draft in his new job. Taylor was 80 years old.
“God got a steal late in the draft when he picked my grandma Sunday,” Reese said. “She was a great lady.”
