Coughlin Not Ruling Out Keyshawn

Keyshawn Johnson, the ex-Jet who got a $3 million per year contract offer from the Giants last March, is available again after getting cut by the Carolina Panthers today. But I wouldn’t bet on him getting another offer from the Giants.

The Giants may give him a call -- in fact, Tom Coughlin indicated they’ll at least explore the possibility in an interview this afternoon on Sirius NFL radio -- but the truth is, the Giants now have plenty of receivers after they used a second-round pick on USC’s Steve Smith on Sunday. They are also convinced that Amani Toomer will be healthy come September, and they obviously have Plaxico Burress and last year’s second-rounder Sinorice Moss.

Johnson would’ve been a much better fit when they were looking for a No. 3 receiver to replace Tim Carter. Either Smith or Moss are expected to fill that role this year.

Still, never say never. And Coughlin didn’t on Sirius’ “The Afternoon Blitz” today when he was asked if Keyshawn “could be on the Giants radar.”

“Well, let’s put it this way,” Coughlin said. “We study every player that’s available and we’ll do that again in light of the fact that Keyshawn is available. We weren’t necessarily thinking that he would be. Of course we made a move in the draft to help solidify that position as well so we’ll take a look at that like we do everything else but beyond that I really can’t comment just yet.”

Various team sources say a pursuit of Johnson is not likely, though none would completely rule it out.

Johnson, by the way, will turn 35 in July. Amazingly, he’s had at least 70 catches in 11 of his 12 NFL seasons -- the lone exception being 2003 when he was suspended for six games by Tampa Bay. He’s just a year removed from signing a four-year, $14 million contract with the Carolina Panthers that included a $5 million signing bonus -- far more than the Giants were willing to pay.

Condolences to Giants GM Jerry Reese and his entire family after his grandmother, Earlene Taylor, passed away late Sunday as her grandson was finishing up his first draft in his new job. Taylor was 80 years old.

“God got a steal late in the draft when he picked my grandma Sunday,” Reese said. “She was a great lady.”

Eli won't have the time to find him when he has Ware and Spencer bearing down on him

I'd put him on the team in a skinny second. For a team making a possible SB run I'd love to have TO, Glenn, and Key on the field with Witten at the same time.

The problem would be having TO and Key in the locker room.

I don't know. TO and Key are supposedly different but both are supposed to be good teammates. The problem would be we won't pass enough to satisfy those two big egos and keep Glenn happy as well. Of course a SB ring tends to make everyone a very happy family.

The problem is Key really thinks he is as good or better than T.O. and T. Glenn. He believes that his draft status in 1996 still carries weight. That alone will be an issue with T.O. Key is a 2nd WR and has been for as long as all of us can remember. Owens took the torch from the leagues best WR in San Fran without Rice actually "falling off". Owens knows this and due to his psychological make-up he would still feel a stigma of being a 3rd round pick in '96 and not getting the "respect" he deserves thus he would act out.

Key would take umbrage with the fact that T.O. is a whinner. Key if nothing else has shown himself to be a stand up guy on the field. When he makes an error he admits it and attempts to make up for it. T.O. on the other hand will try to find someone else to blame. That would set Key off at some point.

So I don't want Key back. I haven't even touched on the fact that he will be 35 this season. Plus, I think he is nothing more than a lighter in weight Anthony Fasano or any halfway decent TE. A big guy who can use his body to catch a ball. Key is no M. Irvin, J. Rice, C. Carter, T. Brown, T. Holt, M. Harrison, T.O., T. Glenn or even a Jason Witten/Anthony Gonzales/Jeremy Shockey/Algee Crumpler/Todd Heap. Never has been even as a 22 yr old #1 pick overall. Hell, he may be similar to M. Muhammad. Maybe. He's had a good career as a possession guy. Hope he finds another job in the league if that is what he wants, if not T.V., or in a front office somewhere. But, as a Cowboys WR....gimme a break.

Key game is not about speed it is about using his big frame and height to shield the defender as he goes up for the ball. He is also a good rout runner using a good burst coming out of his breaks. I think it is important for teams to have a WR with speed to stretch the defense but I also think it is important to have a big target guy who can go in and do the dirty work across the middle and Key can still do that with the best of them.

I think Key would do well in NY. Eli is not an accurate passer, and a big target with long arms would help. But Key would ***** about the passes that were WAY WAY too badly thrown. The reason Plaxico doesn't ***** about the passes is that he runs horrible routes and knows it.

I think he ends up in Green Bay.

The Packers have to help Favre out after not getting Moss. He could be exacly what Favre needs as a security blanker like he did for Bledsoe.

Big target slow off the line. Not what you need in a timing based offense but a perfect helper for Alge Crumpler/Vick based offense in Atlanta.

I'd definitely worry about egos clashing. And we don't need that. We can do well without Key. I'd just love to see those three lined up with Witten. It isn't going to happen no matter what I think.

I don't want him in the NFC much less the NFC East. Key is still a good WR. I'm with you.

I'm not sure he couldn't hurt us some.

Good idea. Favre would benefit. So would Key.

Vick isn't the best guy for Key but Key would help Atl and Vick. Key could probably talk to Vick and get him to listen. I wish him luck.
