Could Leinart be in our future?

With the signing of Coleman, we have pretty much filled all our pressing needs.

We still need help along the offensive line, we need a backup NT, we need a younger WR and possibly a young FS. But none of those needs are that pressing and if we went into the season without them then it would not be a huge deal.

So, do any of you think that with the current team we will be drafting anywhere near the low part of the first round in the next couple of years? In the next few years, will we have all our major holes filled like we do this year?

Drew Bledsoe is here probably for another two or three years. After that, are any of us ready to go with Henson or Romo? That would be a huge risk.

However, since we don't have any pressing needs, would it be possible for us to put together a package to move up to the second pick in the draft this year? I say second pick because I don't think Leinart would make it past the Titans.

The number two selection is worth 2600 points. The 18th selection is worth 900 points. So we would have to give the Saints 1700 points.

If we did make the trade then I think Romo would be part of the deal. I don't think it is any secret that Payton isn't happy with his backups in New Orleans and would like to bring in Romo. I would imagine the Saints would value Romo as like a fourth round pick, which I will be generous and say is worth close to 100 points.

So, we would still owe the Saints 1600 points. Our second round pick is worth 410 points. So, if we gave them that we would still owe them 1190 points.

I doubt we would trade our first, second and third round picks this year to move up. So we would probably have to give the Saints our next year's first round pick as well, which would probably be worth something like 800 points. That would bring us to only owing them about 400 points.

That is still a big chunk of points. It might make sense to add Ellis into the bargain. The Saints lost Howard and they play the 4-3, which Ellis fits in better anyway. But Ellis is probably only worth a late second to third round pick. But that would put us within 100 points.

Our first and second round picks this year, our first round pick next year and Ellis and Romo might be enough to get the deal done. But that is a lot to spend. Is Leinart worth all that?

I don't know. I'm not suggesting we should or will make this deal. Just pointing it out as an idea. When is the next time we will get a shot at selecting a QB like Leinart?

I wouldn't do it......I have never viewed Leinnert as anything special. If Leinert was coming out the same year as McNabb, Culpepper, and that class, where would he be drafted? The second round maybe..............

Wait, how about if we trade Romo for New Orleans 2nd. Then we trade down in the first and pick up another 2nd round pick, plus a 1st next year for our 1st and 4th. Yeah, I know we don't have a 4th, but do they know that? Now we have 3 2nd round picks plus an extra number 1 next year. Wait, there's more. Ok, now if we package Ellis and a 7th conditional pick we can get a 3rd round pick. So that leaves us with 3 2nd rounders, 2 3rd rounders. Following this? Ok, now the tricky part of this plan is to find a way to trade Coakley who is no longer on our team. I think we can get this done.

Matt L could definitely be in the Cowboys future, but not until he is somewhere between 34-40 years old.

Sounds like a Commanders draft.

While i don't think trading up like this is a good idea (it's a bad, bad one), anyone who thinks Leinart is anything other than a great qb/winner is fooling themselves.

He lost 2 games in his college career. One in triple overtime. One at the last second to an amazing performance by Vince Young. But Leinart had a great game as well, including what should have been the winning TD pass to Jarret (if White would have followed his block and got the last 2 inches on 4th down).

People say Leinart won because of a great team. But there were many times (see Notre Dame) when he won the game, taking it on his shoulders.

He's worth the #1 pick. He's the most NFL ready qb possibly ever. But it would cost us way too much to get there.

I seriously doubt it.......history of the draft just does not support it other then the N.O. aints deal for Ricky Williams.

i don't see how it would be possible to move up to #2. i really don't think leinart is that good. he got jacked up in the rose bowl game, and it seems like he's too concerned with off-field activities than football. i say try and get brady quinn next year if at all possible.

I wouldn't draft Leinart if he was sitting there at 18.

(OK, that may be an exaggeration, but I sure as heck wouldn't move up even one spot to get him.)

If Leinart is available at Pick 18, the Dallas rep would do a little dance while handing in the card with Leinart's name on it. The only way is he is available at Pick 18 is if there is a draft "rumor" about drugs, animals, something.
