Could Ryan Williams Lead The Cowboys In Rushing?

As most of my readers know, I am probably leading the campaign for Ryan Williams to get carries in Dallas. And with the Cowboys losing DeMarco Murray to the Eagles and the only real competition on the roster being Darren McFadden, the path to a starting gig for Ryan Williams is pretty clear. The question I ask is this; can Ryan Williams lead the Cowboys in rushing yards in 2015? I don’t think it’s all the unrealistic. Here are four reasons why I think it could happen for Williams in 2015:

Reason 1: The Cowboys May Have Promised Ryan Williams A Shot At The Lead Job

According to Bill Jones, Ryan Williams turned down at least 10 different teams who offered him a spot on their 53 man roster. Why? I think there’s a chance that Dallas knew they were going to lose DeMarco Murray in free agency and “promised” Williams a shot at the lead spot. Williams likely looked at the situation and figured that in a year, he would have a legit shot at beating out Joseph Randle and whichever free agent running back the team would bring in.

I agree.

If you question his ability, go youtube some of his highlights.

He ran behind a zone blocking scheme at Virginia Tech.

If he has improved the things he needs to improve and if he can stay healthy, I think it's possible. Now, will it happen, that's a different question.

If they invest in a first or second round RB...he might get a "shot" at being the starter but I bet that "shot" will be with a gun that has bad sites on it. ;)

Ryan Williams reminds me a lot of Ricky Williams.

Problem with Ryan Williams is dependability and the horrible injuries he has suffered.

Im a fan of his game but I do not trust him.

It'll be a lot easier to predict after the draft. If we don't end up drafting one of the top 4 or 5 guys (or picking up AP), Williams' chances of being the starter go up exponentially.

Splitting hairs.
Ryan Williams a bigger signing bonus than McFadden. What does it mean? To me, it’s highly unlikely that Ryan Williams won’t be on the roster in 2015. McFadden on the other hand, has a contract that is very team friendly that the team can get out from at any time.

Ryan Williams contract
$240K bonus
2015 $585K
2016 $675K

Darren McFadden contract
$200K bonus
2015 $900K
2016 $1.25M

Contract Notes:
  • 2015 Per Game Bonus: $9,375
  • 2016 Per Game Bonus: $31,250
  • Incentives: $2.85M

I've said all along, there's very little difference in the running abilities of Murray and Williams. As a pure runner, I think Williams he's at least as good.
But there are plenty of other factors that have held him back, starting, but not ending, with serious injuries .

We are drafting a RB though

I figure Ryan Williams will be given every shot at making this roster. At this point, the starting job could come with that ... but the same could be said of the other running backs on the roster. All but probably Dunbar will be given a legit shot at starting unless a first-round running back is brought in. And then it could still happen since that player will be a rookie.

Not saying I'm a fan of this because there are big question marks concerning each back, but it appears to be the way that we will go unless we end up trading for Peterson.

Maybe I'm just uninformed but I don't see why people look at Williams as a viable option at RB. I understand he's showed flashes of talent in the past but he was on the practice squad for the entire season last year.

At some point, you are what you are. And from my judgment, he's an injury prone player who is going to have to fight to even make the team.

Again, I'm no expert on this guy, so someone tell me where I'm going wrong.

Ryan Williams is the reason they let DM walk. I predicted 2k from DM behind this OL last year, and I'll make the same prediction this year.
