One free agent the Cowboys will keep an eye on down the road is Laurent Robinson.

The club hoped to keep the receiver after his breakout season in 2011 but could not come close to the 5-year, $32.5 million contract he received from Jacksonville.

It was a good year financially for Robinson _ the contract guaranteed him $14 million _ but not competitively. He suffered four concussions and managed to play in only seven games.

Robinson caught 24 passes for 252 yards and no touchdowns for the Jaguars. He caught 54 passes for 858 yards and 11 touchdowns in his only season with the Cowboys.

Robinson’s health is a concern, and not just the concussions. There are questions to be answered about an ankle injury.

But he developed such a strong rapport with quarterback Tony Romo, especially in the red zone, that he remains an option once the club does have money to spend.

I wouldn't mind having him back, but I feel like Tony can get a lot of average receivers a large pay day.

yes, could see it happening for a near vet minimum and JJ will come out looking like a genius.

No. From all that I have read his concussions are to a point where he has trouble talking to his wife and kids and remembering details of many things. Also in pain. I think the guy should retire. One hit and any investment is gone.

Still experiencing symptoms, Robinson remains sensitive to light and cannot be around his crying infant daughter because of the "throbbing" headaches. The aftereffects have been severe enough that Robinson won't go to the grocery store or even take out the trash during daylight hours.

Yeah, I'd love to have him back, but think he should probably retire at this point. Seems like a nice guy, and I'd hate to see him messed up for life for another season.

What has unfortunately happened to Laurent Robinson is exactly why fans should never question a player when they leave for more money. Their careers are very short and you never know when that time will come that it's over. I wish him good health and hopefully he got a lot of money up front last year.

this is where we can say "god(insert preferred title here) is good".

14m(ok 8m after taxes) in his pocket so he can take care of his family while he heals.

definitely can afford to order groceries in and have someone else take out the trash.

i'd love to have the guy back but it makes little sense for him to risk his mental health for what little we can pay. if anything maybe he'd try again in a year or so.

Oh I think we certainly have an interest -- but we won't do anything until we see how he is physically - even then the best we'd do is give him an incentive-laden deal.

We have to look at him though -- he and Romo had very good chemistry - that isn't always the case with Romo and WRs

Right..same article..quote from wife

Although Robinson is tentatively allowing himself two more concussions before cutting the cord on his football career, his conscientious wife, Kat, is taking a more cautious approach.

"I'm worried every day that it's going to affect our future," Kat said. "I said one more concussion, you need to be done ... I thought how are you going to try to compromise with me on your health, and your brain, and a concussion."

Me too. Even if he wanted to sign for the minimum. He was a great addition. But his health and family come first. Please walk away from the game with your faculties.
At some point we have to see these guys as more than just football players.

Said it in one of the other threads. He really should retire.

His last tweet after his release.

Wednesday 13th March 2013
Thanks to the Jacksonville Jaguars organization and the city of Jacksonville for all your support and the relationships that I made this past year. It was a blessing to play professionally in my home state and close to my family. I look forward to what the future holds and can’t wait for the next opportunity on this journey!

Interview:

The team said Robinson passed a physical last month and was completely healthy.

But the receiver disagreed, telling The Associated Press “there’s no way he could line up and play a game tomorrow.”

Robinson said he told team trainers he felt lightheaded during a workout Tuesday.

“I’m just starting to get back into it,” Robinson said. “I’m hungry to play again. Once I get 100 percent healthy, I’ll be back. I just want to be with a team that really wants me.”

Still, the decision caught Robinson off guard.

“It’s unfortunate, but it’s part of the business,” Robinson said. “Got to keep your head up and keep moving. Can’t ever be surprised in this league.”

The guy can't even tolerate bright lights, can't even take the trash out in daylight, and some would bring him back. No, I don't think so.

Give GM Jerry Jones credit for not signing the guy to a long term contract last year. Even though he probably lucked into the right decision due to lack of available cap space.

That was a couple months back. Now he has worked out but did say he was light headed. But he does plan on coming back and the Cowboys I'm sure would love to give him a shot once he is well.

It's his choice and I won't begrudge Dallas giving him a chance if that's what he wants. The Cowboys just can't invest much into that chance.

I think that article was early February that I posted so not too long back and this was months after his concussions. There are guys that are just prone to them. He he is light headed now, what happens when he thinks he is healthy and gets a jarring hit or hits the hard turf? I just think teams should push the guy to hang it up...enjoy the family.

I would think he's a vet minimum guy. He's already getting guaranteed money from the Jags this year.
