A Super Bowl XII championship ring that once belonged to Dallas Cowboy defensive end Harvey Martin has been sold at auction, despite efforts by his son to get a court to stop the sale.
The ring brought $71,700 in a sale conducted Feb. 21 by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions. The bidding took place in New York and online, acording to the auction house.
Martin, who played for the Cowboys from 1973 to 1983, had a standout year in 1977, when he made 23 sacks, which still stands as a Cowboys record, and 85 tackles, according to Heritage Auctions. He was named Defensive Player of the Year for the 1977 regular season and shared Super Bowl XII's Most Valuable Player recognition with Randy White.
DeVincent Martin, one of Harvey Martin's two sons, filed a lawsuit Feb. 19 in Dallas County's State District Court to stop the Super Bowl ring's auction. According to the plaintiff's petition and application for injunctive relief, Harvey Martin died Dec. 24, 2001, without a will.
