A Super Bowl XII championship ring that once belonged to Dallas Cowboy defensive end Harvey Martin has been sold at auction, despite efforts by his son to get a court to stop the sale.

The ring brought $71,700 in a sale conducted Feb. 21 by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions. The bidding took place in New York and online, acording to the auction house.

Martin, who played for the Cowboys from 1973 to 1983, had a standout year in 1977, when he made 23 sacks, which still stands as a Cowboys record, and 85 tackles, according to Heritage Auctions. He was named Defensive Player of the Year for the 1977 regular season and shared Super Bowl XII's Most Valuable Player recognition with Randy White.

DeVincent Martin, one of Harvey Martin's two sons, filed a lawsuit Feb. 19 in Dallas County's State District Court to stop the Super Bowl ring's auction. According to the plaintiff's petition and application for injunctive relief, Harvey Martin died Dec. 24, 2001, without a will.

I guess there was no proof if it was stolden.
I thought the auction houses had to verify clear ownership?

In a perfect world whoever purchased it will see that his family gets it.

Way before my time but I think I remember reading he passed from cancer.

If so I presume he was ill for a time. I don't understand why he wouldn't have a will particularly having kids.

Hope it ends up back with his son.

Martin for some reason never got the respect he deserved. He was a beast of a player and I think should have been in our Ring of Honor years ago.

he unfortunatily came to the fore BEFORE players were fully hyped and packaged. Thus the lack of respect via monies or more honors. If nothing else he half the respect and love of a lot of Cowboys fans.

May be hard with stuff like this. What kind of paper trail do you get if you buy pawned sports memorabilia? The owner could have purchased it legally without knowing it was stolen.

That's a shame you live your life achieving so much and leaving your legacy as a Dallas Cowboy, only to have remnants of your greatness are being auctioned out 14 years later, (sigh) that ring should be where it belongs with his Family.
