Bill Parcells' marinara-stained fingerprints are all over the decision to hire Wade Phillips. Owner Jerry Jones will argue otherwise, and it's somewhat true. But think about it. Do you really think that old-school Parcells' parting advice to Jones was to hire an offense-savvy California guy such as Norv Turner? As owner, Jones felt he had a choice to make. He chose defense over offense. DeMarcus Ware over Tony Romo.

Wade Phillips sat inside Jerry Jones' home for roughly an hour Thursday, noshing on tortilla soup, lobster tacos and hamburgers after a flight on a private jet from San Diego earlier in the morning. Quietly, Phillips and the Cowboys owner moved to a private room, where the two hammered out the final details of a contract.

I disagree, I don't think Parcells would have suggested Phillips as his replacement and in fact I believe he was pushing for Turner instead.

If... excuse me, WHEN Phillips comes in and turns our 3-4 into the kind of defense it should have been all along, Parcells will be shown for the has-been that he is. He is a terrible game-day coach and plays "not to lose" rather than playing to win.

The 3-4 is designed to be an aggressive defense but Parcells allowed Zimrod to inject his "read and react" "bend but don't break" style into it, robbing it of its potency and aggressiveness. All we had was 3 DTs, 2 DEs, and 2 LBs playing the same style of defense that Zimrod ran under Dave Campo (and Campo under Gailey). It didn't play at all like a true 3-4 defense.

Parcells should have never come out of retirement the last time. He coached like an old man who was more afraid to lose than he was determined to win.

I do appreciate the way he cleaned house of the malcontents, only to be stuck with the worst one of all in Owens, but I still do not believe he was on board with that move no matter what he says. He certainly never showed any signs that he was happy about it which would imply that he was against it. Again, I think he was too old to argue with Jerry about it. "Fine Jerry, it's your team, do what you want. I'll just learn to deal with it."

Of course, all of this, including the article at the top of the thread is purely conjecture, but that's my take on it.

I can see Parcells behind this choice somewhat.

I think he probably advised Jones that starting over with the 4-3 would take a season or two, and going with WP brought in not only HC experience, but 3-4 experience too.

And although he is a prideful man, I don't think he would let pride come before winning.

I know Parcells always liked players and coaches whose father was a coach. He mentioned that with Zimmer.

That applies somewhat to JG and directly to WP. So there is that.

It seems like a solid selection if not the sexy one, which is Parcells way too.

But like was said before, this is pure speculation.
