Rookie review

A look at the Dallas Cowboys’ 2009 draft class:

LB Jason Williams (3rd round, Western Illinois) Tied an NCAA all-divisions record by forcing 14 career fumbles.

OT Robert Brewster (3rd round, Ball State) Gave up only 2.5 sacks on 405 pass plays and had 100 knockdowns.

QB Stephen McGee (4th round, Texas A&M) First quarterback drafted by the Cowboys since Quincy Carter in 2001.

LB Victor Butler (4th round, Oregon State) Pass-rush specialist had 12 sacks as a senior and 10.5 as a junior.

LB Brandon Williams (4th round, Texas Tech) Fort Worth South Hills ex led the Big 12 with 13 sacks.

CB/KR DeAngelo Smith (5th round, Cincinnati) Had 12 career interceptions, returned two for TDs.

DB Michael Hamlin (5th round, Clemson) Had 6 interceptions and 16 passes defensed as a senior.

K David Buehler (5th round, USC) Had touchbacks on 55 percent of his kickoffs as a senior at USC.

LB Stephen Hodge (6th round, TCU) Big hitter who had 10 tackles for loss as a senior.

TE John Phillips (6th round, Virginia) Brings power blocking and is a short- to medium-range target.

DE Mike Mickens (7th round, Cincinnati) Bouncing back from nagging injuries, but has lockdown potential.

WR Manuel Johnson (7th round, Oklahoma) Experience at powerful Oklahoma makes him a sleeper prospect.

After having so much negative press about these guys after our draft, I am looking forward to seeing them in pads.

I hope we pulled off a few draft day steals in this group!
