Cowboys’ Ron Leary says he ‘definitely’ is the starter over La’el Collins

La’el Collins is a top 15 talent that fell into the Cowboys lap after the draft due to a serious of unfortunate circumstances. He should be a big part of this team’s future.

But the assumption that the rookie would simply step into the starting lineup is premature.

Ask Ron Leary. He currently owns the job Collins is trying to claim.

“It bothered me a little bit, but it’s part of the game,’’ Leary said of Collins’ presumed ascension. “I know I can play. I know I’m a starter in this league. I’ve just got to remind everybody.’’

Collins needs to set his phaser on RT apparently

I don't see it. Not this year anyway.

As for Leary's job at LG? I think he starts the year against the Giants, but I'll be curious to see how he fares against Fletcher Cox in week 2. If he struggles as badly as he has in the past, I think the competition could be opened up.

Leary was a target for opposing defenses in last year's playoffs.

Yeah if Leary can clean up his pass protection he will be really good. If not, he has people looking to take his job. Good problem for us to have.

Leary was a practice squad guy his rookie year. He said he had a hard time learning the playbook, and it cost him a chance to make the 53 out of camp. Once he did, he knew he could play at this level.

Collins needs to do just that. Get his head around the playbook first, so his skills can blossom from there.

Keep Leary as the starter until Collins is ready. If Leary plays well we can eventually trade him for a high draft pick.

I really like Leary. I was looking forward to him being our future LG before we acquired Collins. I really hope he can still be in our plans but it might be a case of "there a'int room for the two of us in this town." I'd love to see 5 young and talented guys on the line. Free is here for now but we need to start looking for his replacement now. Leary is proven in my opinion. Collins has supreme potential. I'd hate to lose Leary and put all our chips into unproven guys like Chaz Green and Laurence Gibson.

One thing people should not forget is Leary himself is only 26 years old and been in the league only 3 years and a starter for 2 years. No doubt he sees himself as a starter after all he went out and earned it. For someone to take it from him they will have to earn it.

I hope he can at least swing to tackle if needed. I think we have the best internal OL depth and talent in the league. Tackle scares me.

I just like his attitude. He isn't going to let someone rip the starting job from him without a fight.

Myself but people are talking about him as if he is some mid 30 year old player who has been around a long time, he hasn't. He is young OL player and your right he is not going to hand over a job he had to fight for to earn it

collins has to play a certain amount every game, to qualify for early pay raise or something.
know one of the issues was he has to play in every game for 2 years ?? not start or play whole game, but play,
So I think collins will play a little every game but leary will still start and be main guy for awhile.

I still think Collins overtakes him by the end of camp. He has looked good so far, and while Leary is solid, I just dont think he is good enough to hold off someone with that much ability

I don't think people are talking about him like that. I think people are talking about him like he's already reached his potential and has a low ceiling. When, in fact, he's almost as young and inexperienced as the other 3 studs on the line and he still has a lot of untapped potential.

I agree, this is not a knock on Collins to me this is about competing and I have no problem with whoever wins this battle. Either way Cowboys benefit with a very good starter and quality backup
