Cowboys 2006 Cap Status

With 46 players signed for next season, I have the Cowboys a little better than $21 million below the 2006 salary cap.

Releasing Al Singleton, Flozell Adams and Dat Nguyen would get us close to $27.5 million to the good.

If the team was to get a nice offer and trade La'Roi Glover, in addition to releasing the above 3 players, we would be $32 million below the salary cap.

I'll post all the salaries and bonus information that I have, as soon as I can figure out how to make a legible table (HTML doesn't work?).

Then everyone can look over the numbers, and see if they know of anything different, and maybe together we can come up with the best cap estimate possible.

If anyone keeps up with this, and already has a different number, let me know.

Thanks,
Trip

Now why would we go and release Flo? Hasn't this season proved that we need him?

I don't know that we would.

But his 2006 cap number is $7 million, his release saves us $3 million and with the type of injury he had, you can't be sure he'll be the same player.

That's a lot of money, and if there's a replacement out there, it's something you have to look at.

There are sometimes darn good tackles on the free agent market that make $3 million in the first year of their contract, and that's what we would save....

Out of those 3 Id let go Singleton if we can pickup some decent rookies at OLB or some FA's and keep the Flo and Nguyen. Gotta cut Fujita and just move shanle to a pure special teams player :D

I'd say Singleton's a definite cut.

No way he's worth the $2.7 million hit we'll take next year. A replacement can be found in free agency cheaper than that, and I think we'll draft a LB or two.

Dat will probably retire.

It does seem like a lot, but I'll post it soon, and maybe someone can tell which players I'm off on, then we'll all know.

Granted FLO has to be evaluated during his rehab but barring bad luck in that regards there is no way you can release him with several others moves on the Oline probably needed. (Center, RG, maybe RT)

If Tucker had proven that he could hold his own as a pass blocker I think Flozell could have been a cap casualty... but not now.

What if we can find a free agent left tackle that's just as good and will accept a $3 million cap number in his first year? One that hasn't had a major injury in the past year?

Agree Dat will probably retire. Singleton is solid vet OLB but hope we sign a good FA LB who can be the bookend opposite Ware contingent on Burnett's play & whether he moves inside. Didn't realize Adams cost so much against the cap in 06; we could cut him & replace him with young stud OT but that still leaves us vulnerable at RT with only Pettiti & Colombo competing for starting RT job. While Pettiti should improve by participating in offseason weight conditioning program, will it be enough & at this point we only have Colombo (trying to come back after 3 years from knee'nerve damage in his rookie season). Don't want to leave us vulnerable at RT if Pettiti/Colombo don't work out or we have an injury there. Will be interested to see how Jerry/Parcells deal with us.

Don't forget we will need to resign Roy William, James Bradie & Jason Witten to new contracts with appropriate bonuses for their play. I also don't see us bringing Glover back since he will cost us $4M+ against the cap in 06. Would like to keep Ellis $2.5M cap hit in 06 if possible.

I think Ellis stays unless he's traded. Even though his cap hit is $2.5 million like you said, releasing him only saves us about $450,000 because he's signed through 2009. Plus he's still a good player.

I agree they will look to trade Glover. No way they can just outright release him (at least I don't think).

Think of it, you trade Glover for a decent return, and at the same time free up $4.5 million to sign other players. Of course its doubtful we can get much for him, because the team that trades for him will only have him signed for one year.

We definately need to wait & see on Flozell. He was playing Pro-Bowl calibur LT before he got hurt. The last thing we need is to lose that kind of talent on an already iffy Oline. I would love to see us draft a LT prospect like Marcus McNeil, Jon Scott, or Eric Winston to be tutored by Flo for a year. Then, if the prospect is ready the following year, we can afford to cut Adams loose. We also need a dominating OG like Max Jean-Gilles or Davin Joseph to groom to replace LA in the next year or two when he retires.

Release Flozelle Adams????? He is the only good OL we have on the team. I guess you havent noticed how bad our OL has been since he got injured.

I think Peterman, Price, Procter, Ogbogu, Coleman, Caver, Reeves, Nate Jones all must hit the road. I know they aren't all signed next year, just saying, don't bring them back.

Look to trade Glover. Consider Larry hitting the road. Gurode/Rivera at guard. Yea, we all hate Rivera I'm sure, but give the guy a year to get his strength back that he lost with the back injury.

We have to much invested in Peterman to let him go. Reeves can play in this league. If we trade Glover, who takes his place?

Invested in Peterman? From what I've heard, he's been a bum. Reeves has a shot, might be worth keeping him around. Glover doesn't have a replacement, but his value in the 3-4 is less and less each week. I love him, no doubt, but he's not the kind of guy we need. We need a slob in the NT that can command a double team to allow Canty, Spears, Ellis, Ware, etc, etc, etc to get one on one matchups to get pressure. Right now we get nothing from Glover or Ferguson.
