Correct me if I am wrong, but the last time the Dallas Cowboys went all in on the first day of free agency was back in 2012 when the team decided to invest in a shiny new Carr. Many of us were in agreement with that choice, at least at the time, since cornerback was a serious position of need for the franchise. In retrospect, that move was not a good one, but we are not here to rehash old mistakes. Now is the time to look forward.

What has emerged since that signing is a Dallas team that has looked around for players who could come in and give the team solid productivity without breaking the bank. According to Cowboys Executive Vice-President Stephen Jones, fans can expect to see more of the same this off-season.

"I think active can get you in trouble in free agency. I think you have to be efficient and look for your values, and you can do good things. We did it last year with a player like Mincey where we got a lot of great value out of him. But at the same time, we've been in situations where you have to pay too much for players. You got to be very careful there. We're certainly going to be that way. We're going to look to be efficient. If that proves to be productive then that would be good." - Stephen Jones

Defensive end Trent Cole: Yes, I called him a defensive end even if he played outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme the last two years with the Philadelphia Eagles. He turns 32 in October, but he has been durable and productive. He has 14.5 sacks the last two years and has four double-digit sack seasons. He is a bridge player to where the Cowboys can cover themselves for a year or two as they look to rebuild the line in the draft. If he’s looking for some good coin, then I think the Cowboys pass, but he would fill a need and give the Cowboys another pretty good pass-rusher to go with Jeremy Mincey and DeMarcus Lawrence.

I like this as a boost for two seasons...and I haven't forgotten about Anthony Spencer as well.

IIRC, Dez burned Skrine several times last time we played the Browns a couple years ago. It was ugly. I hope he's gotten better since then.

ETA: Yep, Dez had 12 rec, 145 yds, 1 TD. A ton of PI's against Skrine to boot. Anecdotally, that was the game that launched Dez into his 2nd half of season tear. So thanks, Skrine?

I think you make good points. Hope we at least bring him in for a look. Heres the teams a paper is speculating may call him in to look (took out SF cause of Dockett)

Falcons: New head coach Dan Quinn needs pass rushers to make his defense work, and right now the Falcons don't have many. Cole could easily fit into Atlanta's front four.

Panthers: Carolina is another team weak up front and could use Cole's veteran presence and pass-rushing skills. Coordinator Sean McDermott also knows him from their time together with the Eagles.

Bengals: Cole's hometown team finished dead last in the league last season in sacks per pass play. He could make a difference and get a chance to go home again.

Cowboys: Dallas doesn't have a lot of room under the salary cap, but owner Jerry Jones often finds ways to make things happen. Cole has always played well against the Cowboys, and that sometimes goes a long way in decision-making.

Neither Peters or Schofield have done anything to get 3.5 million a year.
