Cowboys 2015 Training Camp: Corey White Makes A Case For Himself

Does in the defensive secondary are nothing knew for the Dallas Cowboys. After previous attempts to address the concern fell short of the mark, the team once again took a defensive back in the first round of the recent NFL Draft. They also went to the waiver wire market by claiming former New Orleans Saints defensive back Corey White. The Samford product was waived by the Saints after three seasons in the league.

During his time in NOLA, White was a part-time starter, getting the first-string nod in 19 of his 41 career games. During that time he recorded 125 tackles, four interceptions and he forced two fumbles. He has experience at both cornerback and free safety. That flexibility is something that will appeal to the coaching staff. So will efforts like the one that White delivered in the 17-7 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

During the game's second stanza White came away with deflected passes, and in both instances he nearly came away with the football. The Cowboys are one of four teams that tied for seventh in the league for team interceptions last season. The 18 total picks was a decent number, a slight improvement from the team's 11th place ranking in 2013, but there is room for improvement. White thinks that he can be the man who helps Dallas crack the top five, assuming that he starts holding on to the ball...

The arrow definitely appears to be pointing up for Corey White. He was all over the field vs. SD and made plays that likely had his former NO team wishing they hadn't dismissed him. There is no shame in looking poor in Rob Ryan's system -- which was surely proven during Rob's time with Dallas. He'll probably be a great blessing in the regular season for Dallas. We should look forward to seeing more of him in the preaseason games to come. Picking him up off the waiver wire was one of the very best moves of our offseason, imho.

It's early but for what we paid and how good he looked the Cowboys may have hit a homerun.

The CB / DB situation went from a big question mark to a positive situation. Kind of like the LB's did last year. And as the DL seems to be doing this year.
OL even better, but swing tackle still a concern. TE's, WR's same, if Whitehead can replace Harris, which I think he can. QB's same, just need to get the RB situation resolved. These next few weeks are important to see on that. Get these 3 guys through healthy and get going into regular season.

I wish him the best but as someone who watched every play of every Saint's game last season I can tell you he just had a knack for screwing up, hopefully he's a better player now.

Byron Jones is the Next Superstar for the Dallas Cowboys
By Phillip Fontana

http://www.rantsports.com/nfl/2015/08/14/byron-jones-is-the-next-superstar-for-the-dallas-cowboys/

With their first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys picked Byron Jones of Connecticut. He turned heads at the combine by shattering not only combine records, but a world record in standing broad jump. He had a huge vertical (44.5 in) and beat the world record broad jump (12.3 feet). He is athletic, extremely smart (33 on the Wonderlic) and he also has the instincts to be a great NFL corner. His versatility is what ultimately made the Cowboys pick him at 27th overall, as he can also play the safety position.

At 6-foot-1 he is a rather tall corner, but this gives him the opportunity to cover some of the bigger receivers in the league. For Dallas fans, having someone that can finally cover the bigger receivers in the league is great news. With his vertical, he has the opportunity to make some interceptions no one else could. This makes him a very intriguing player this season. He can also slot in at safety in certain packages, and has the tools to do very well there also.

He has everything needed to be a standout player this season, and has already been thrown into the fire. He has had to cover one of the best in the game in Dez Bryant, and broke up a pass against him in training camp. One pass defended isn’t much to write home about; however, this is Bryant we are talking about, so that alone should inspire confidence. So far he has turned heads in camp, and has the confidence of the organization. He fully represents Jason Garrett’s RKG mantra. Everything about him says he could have one terrific season. Something along the lines of 50-60 tackles, 5 interceptions and 13-25 passes defended sounds close to the kind of production you can expect out of Jones this season. That is great production out of a rookie, and Dallas would be very happy with that. Watch out for Jones, because he will be the next superstar corner in this league.

This group of cornerbacks definitely have the potential to be a very reliable and aggressive group.

at the very least if he can play to the level of Sterling Moore, it's good for the team. If he can play better...awesome.

Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne: This is the best I’ve felt since college

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne tosses a ball while warming up before afternoon practice at training camp on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015, in Oxnard, Calif. (Smiley N. Pool/The Dallas Morning News)

OXNARD, Calif. — Morris Claiborne didn’t miss Thursday’s preseason opener because he’s still battling knee issues.

The fourth-year corner is ready to go. It’s the Cowboys coaching and training staff that decided to hold him out. Claiborne said Saturday that if he’s cleared to play Aug. 23 at San Francisco, he’ll be on the field.

“When they want me to go play, I’m playing this game, I’m going to go play,” he said. “If they’re holding me out, they’re holding me out. But like I said, I’ll be ready no matter what.”

Claiborne, the sixth overall pick in 2012, says this is the best he’s felt since starring at LSU. Dealing with knee issues throughout his time with the Cowboys, Claiborne finally feels like he doesn’t have to be cautious when he’s on the field.

“I feel good,” he said. “I don’t have no complaints about how I’m playing from the coaching staff. Everybody seems to be pleased with where I’m at. I’m pleased with where I’m at, and whether I take a preseason snap or not, I’ll be ready to play for that home opener.”...

I had seen where Saints fans complained about him. I pulled up a few of their games on the All-22 and I didn't see any problem with him in those games. I guess I just didn't watch the right games.

I don't guess you happen to remember which game(s) were a problem do you ?

He couldn't pick up a fumble back near his end zone that could have turned a game around (paticular game escapes me)
He made a poor play against the Lions when he just needed to tackle Golden Tate and instead he made a poor attempt at playing the ball
There were others but these stick out, my perception is he's just a guy who can't make a play when it's there to be made, I'm probably being unfair though

We may have 6 good CBs and 0 good safeties.

I'd really like to make Jones our FS if Carr, Scandrick, Claiborne, White and Patmon are all as good as advertised.

I wouldn't use Jones as a safety, except in a package alternative. He is too valuable not to build for the immediate future.

Thanks. I found the 1 in the Lions game. He should either have played that safe or should have more help if he is going to play it that tight. The play appeared destined to fail because there were 2 receivers in the flat with White as the only defender in the area. I think better coaching can definitely improve that particular play.

Corey White looked good in that 1st pre-season game. I would not be shocked if he was a starter in the 1st game of the regular season at CB.
