I know most people are gauging defense by yds per game. But dont you think that this is a more important stat? We are currently #3 (16.5 ppg). The Patriots are at #2 at 16.4. We could be at #2 after tonight. I dont think Patriots will hold Saints under 16.4 points tonight but still think Patriots can win. Would you rather have a defense that give up fewest points or fewest yards?

Fewest points is my #1 hope in a Defense followed closely by most takeaways. Yardage is down the list.

If the Saints score 19 points, we are #2 behind Cincy at 164 points allowed.

The obvious answer is POINTS. Yards haven't really matted anymore with the NFL rules that limit defenses.

This is the biggest reason why this December will be different. People want to point at the offense as the reason we've faded in Decembers - I heartily disagree. In past Decembers, since Romo tookover, the defense always seemed to go first - then in an attempt to overcompensate, the offense took more risks and paid the price. This year looks alot different. The defense is keeping the offense in games. That's how you win down the stretch.

well to me the yards stat is more indicative of how well you are really playing. I know the whole "bottom line" thing has some validity. Theyre gonna be 2 in points yet like 16th in yards, which is an odd difference. We did give up more yards in earlier games.

This is the one point lost in all this mess. Alot of the blame was heaped on Romo's shoulders (he's deserves his fair share, but not the brunt of the load) for the December and playoff collapses. In all the hoopla everyone seems to forget the easy TD that the D gave up before half-time of the Giants playoff game, or the defensive collapse against the Eagles and Ravens last season. That DOES create a domino effect on the rest of the game plan on both offense and special teams.

If this team shakes the slump this year, the defense will be the difference.

I don't know about that. While Wade has always produced good defenses, his defenses have been known for collapsing too. His defenses have never been like the Steelers, Ravens (with Rex), etc where they were consistently solid. His defense has always had games where they fold. You just hope it's 1 or 2 games and not more than that. You also hope they come early in the season. (they did thus far) and hope they don't repeat. (especially in the playoffs)

yeah, we must get more takeaways from opposing teams offenses, and their special teams poor play.

thats true in big games, important ones like playoff games, either his special teams play tailed off or his defense. Hopefully, will be fixed this year, the key for us this year on defense to me is the play of spencer, he must keep improving to take some double team stuff off of ware.

hatcher must step up too, like Bowen is,

hopefully our high number 3 pick jason williams improves with his top end speed, 4.49 in the 40 to help us on special teams play with some help on defense.

Google Wade Phillips. Click his Wikipedia, then get his location year by year as a DC or HC, then check his defensive performance game by game for those years / teams. There is always collapses in certain games. He hasn't won a playoff game for a reason.

You guys who don't appreciate ST's may not get it......

But now would be a hell of a time for Buehler and McBriar to get hot.

Touch backs and coffin corner kicks with the D playing the way it is will go a long way.

That includes all of the bogus points they have given up because the offense turned the ball over or special teams blew it too, specifically the Gints game.

They give up a lot of yards in garbage time and when playing with a lead because other team shave to throw throw throw. This defense is actually better than their stats (other than turnovers) imo.

I'm pretty sure the opposite is true. Wades defenses improve throughout the year. Not as you claimed.

Stamp!

Double-Stamp!!

Triple-Stamp!!!

This is so true...and obviously there have been other distractions and key injuries to mix in but everyone wants to blame Romo for bad Decembers when it is a team effort.
