It's clear how the Cowboys have approached this free agency period.
From the get go, I felt like this was a weak FA class and a weak draft class.
The Cowboys have instead decided to re-sign some of their own players who they know 100% for short term contracts, almost entirely 1 year deals, just to get us to next year. We all know that most of these big deals will be regretted later in the year.
A lot can change in a year.
Is the team in love with Hanna, McClain, Wilber, or Claiborne? No, but they know what they are getting with these players, and they can create a plan around them, and also give them a shot to show their full range.
If McClain doesn't have a great year next year and stay out of trouble, either we can get another linebacker, or Hitchens can probably replace him going forward.
There aren't a lot of secondary players of value right now out there and in my opinion nothing that really jumps out in the draft.
And to be honest, I think Jerry Jones is giving Jason Garrett another year with the same team to prove that 4-12 was because of injuries compared to 12-4. If he doesn't have a good year next year, I'm pretty sure he is gone. Why give a ton of money to free agents, who may or may not fit the next coach's scheme?
I think you have to look at our team in 2014 and ask can we simply be better than that team? And I think that's easy to do given we have the same personnel minus say Durant and Carter, who I think we've upgraded from with Lee and McClain.
My biggest hesitation with the team as it is proceeding now, is that I feel like they may think they're fine with McFadden, and the fact that they didn't sign Matt Moore I found deeply troubling. 1-4 year deal at 2-3 million per year for Matt Moore would have been fair I think.
I also think that not signing Lamar Miller to the amount of money he wanted and length of time was the smart thing to do. I championed signing Miller, but only for the right amount of money. I still hope we draft Ezekiel Elliott (especially with the Giants and Eagles in position to take him), but without re-signing Hardy, I'm kind of getting on the Bosa bandwagon. I would also be happy with Jalen Ramsey. At this point I think Goff is a high possibility too, which generally upsets me.
In conclusion these moves should be seen for what they are. A way to give the Cowboys ultimate flexibility in the draft and if other free agents become available at a later date. If you're not in love with a player, you don't sign them to a big long term contract. If a player hasn't played for your team, you have no idea if they will fit in the same way they did with a previous team. It's a huge gamble that most of the time does not pay off.
