It's clear how the Cowboys have approached this free agency period.

From the get go, I felt like this was a weak FA class and a weak draft class.

The Cowboys have instead decided to re-sign some of their own players who they know 100% for short term contracts, almost entirely 1 year deals, just to get us to next year. We all know that most of these big deals will be regretted later in the year.

A lot can change in a year.

Is the team in love with Hanna, McClain, Wilber, or Claiborne? No, but they know what they are getting with these players, and they can create a plan around them, and also give them a shot to show their full range.

If McClain doesn't have a great year next year and stay out of trouble, either we can get another linebacker, or Hitchens can probably replace him going forward.

There aren't a lot of secondary players of value right now out there and in my opinion nothing that really jumps out in the draft.

And to be honest, I think Jerry Jones is giving Jason Garrett another year with the same team to prove that 4-12 was because of injuries compared to 12-4. If he doesn't have a good year next year, I'm pretty sure he is gone. Why give a ton of money to free agents, who may or may not fit the next coach's scheme?

I think you have to look at our team in 2014 and ask can we simply be better than that team? And I think that's easy to do given we have the same personnel minus say Durant and Carter, who I think we've upgraded from with Lee and McClain.

My biggest hesitation with the team as it is proceeding now, is that I feel like they may think they're fine with McFadden, and the fact that they didn't sign Matt Moore I found deeply troubling. 1-4 year deal at 2-3 million per year for Matt Moore would have been fair I think.

I also think that not signing Lamar Miller to the amount of money he wanted and length of time was the smart thing to do. I championed signing Miller, but only for the right amount of money. I still hope we draft Ezekiel Elliott (especially with the Giants and Eagles in position to take him), but without re-signing Hardy, I'm kind of getting on the Bosa bandwagon. I would also be happy with Jalen Ramsey. At this point I think Goff is a high possibility too, which generally upsets me.

In conclusion these moves should be seen for what they are. A way to give the Cowboys ultimate flexibility in the draft and if other free agents become available at a later date. If you're not in love with a player, you don't sign them to a big long term contract. If a player hasn't played for your team, you have no idea if they will fit in the same way they did with a previous team. It's a huge gamble that most of the time does not pay off.

Good post . I have the same thoughts just lazy to write it . Filling gaps with decent depth makes the position stronger when you can add a young talented player in the draft. I think it's a good approach.

I generally agree with your post. I'd be happy with any of the top five players
and i include Zeek in the top five .
Is the Matt Moore bromance finished?
We'll disagree on Red. He'll finish his contract.

If he does that means we must be winning.

If Zeke Elliot is still available I think the Giants snag him @#8 or Philthy @#13.

If so, why not Dallas @ #4?

He's easily my choice, though I'd like to trade down as far as 7 to get him, but if no trade down is available, I would take him at 4.

Think he delivers an impact much greater than Bosa or Ramsey. And I'm not at all interested in taking a QB, but at this rate, it looks like we may have no choice. That being said, we've done nothing for the pass rush either....

I agree that Zeek offers the most impact of players rated in top five. I would love Wentz however.
But that's a dead horse we're pulling to the draft.

Honestly, I think Hardy and Weddle would make it so that we don't have to address any specific areas in the draft and allow us to draft for the future and/or go BPA. If we get Chris Long, we'd still need to address DE early, or at least we'd need to rely on Gregory more than we might feel comfortable with. Hardy isn't a long term solution but he's talented enough to hold down the fort for another year while we see what we have in Gregory. And Weddle would make us not be forced to get Ramsey. He'd even give us the opportunity to move Jones to CB if we get a SS like Karl Joseph. If we don't address the safety and DE positions with good players in free agency, we'll pretty much be forced to go Bosa/Ramsey in the 1st round. Likewise, the RoMc signing made it that we aren't forced to go Jack in the 1st round. Similar to Hardy, he's a young player with a lot of talent that can hopefully not let the baggage pile up too high so we can count on him for a year.

Let me be first to say that I have no problem with Zeke at #4. I think drafting him will even help Romo since he also is a GREAT blocker.

But I think at #4....you can snag up a playmaker like a Jack or Ramsey. That's a starter for you this year. With that 2nd round pick.....you could possibly get a defensive tackle or a running back that can start for you. With that 3rd round pick...you could possibly also get another starters. That's 3 new starting additions right there.

Waiting and taking a running back in the 2nd or 3rd round allows you to add more starters to this team.

I won't scoff at Zeke at all. If he's a dominant running back I don't think anyone should care where he's drafted. But I think you can get a dominant back in that 2nd and/or 3rd as well.

You don't go DE in the 1st round unless you believe Gregory will be cut or he's not a starter in this league. Whether we like it or not this team is going forward with Lawrence and Gregory as their future DE positions. They need someone to come in and hold it down for the first four weeks of the season.
