Cowboys and dumb Penalties

Just wondering if anyone thinks Garrett can clean up these stupid penalties? Who do you blame for the Cowboys being one of the most penalized teams in the NFL? I know there are other "good" teams that are penalized a lot but it seems we can't afford to be near the top of the list again this year. Did we have a lot of penalties when Parcells was here because I can't remember? For some reason, and its probably just me, but the Cowboys look disorganized, especially on offense. The rush to get a play off and people running around trying to get lined up seems to be continuing from last year and we don't need this. I know Garrett has spoken about this and realize he is addressing it but it looks like last year all over again.....

Penalties were a big problem when Parcells was here and have continued through the Wade era into Garrett tenure.

Parcells was quoted as saying "I don't coach penalties" or something to that affect.

Edit:
Something to consider: Penalties have been an issue throughout the tenure of at least 3 head coaches and there are only a handfull of players remaining that played for Parcells; however, the NFL officials have not changed.

Why is it so hard for them to clean up the penalties?

$10,000 for every penalty due to a mental lapse would stop them. The CBA probably prevents that type of accountability.

They haven't been able to clean up the penalties in years and years here so I'm not sure how confident I'd be in them cleaning them up to much this year either.

I don't know what all the reasons are for those things but I'm guessing there are a bunch of factors and it's something you just live with I guess.

Yeah, that would never fly. And I agree with Xwalker. Sure, we have some presnap penalties, and I'm not one to put too much on the officials, but I've seen too much inconsistency between what we get called for, and what the opponent gets called for. I'm probably just being biased, but take two of our holding penalties the other night - one on Witten, one on Coale. To me, they were both ticky tack, and I saw glaring examples of holding that the Raiders didn't get called for. I'm sure stuff like that happens to every team, every game, but it sure seems like we get the short end of the stick.

I think it was Percy who put up the roughing the passer penalties over the last few years. We don't get a whole lot called against us, but we never get one called for us. And with the number of times Tony gets hit, it seems unbelievable. Same goes for Ware. Guy gets held all the time, almost never draws a flag.

Completely and totally frustrated. AGAIN they have the drive killing penalties.

What I saw against the Raiders with the supposed first team was a re-run of several years running. Depressing.

This is a little breakdown

First ranking is # penalties
Second is penalty yards
(1 being good 32 being bad)

COACH : PARCELLS

2003 10th/11th
2004 10th/3rd
2005 8th/14th
2006 21st/31st

COACH : WADE

2007 28th/26th
2008 32nd/31st
2009 29th/28th

COACH WADE/GARRETT

2010 27th/20th

COACH : GARRETT

2011 28th/14th
2012 30th/19th

Make of those figures what you will. Obviously the timing of those penalties cannot be hughlighted easily, or of they extended drives etc but it is not a pretty picture.
It was better under Parcells for three of his 4 years it appears though.

This has been one of the most mind boggling thing for me with Dallas. They always shoot themselves in the foot with bad penalties. And it's across the board. From our stars like Witten, Ware, and Romo to our role players and scrubs (Stupid Alex Barron). The most frustrating thing about being a Cowboys fan are the stupid freaking penalties.

Yes and they are very serious in terms of winning and losing. I think the Ravens had a lot of penalties last year too but that is a different team. We can't afford to have these drive killing penalties. I think this is something many fans take lightly......

It would be interesting to breakdown offensive vs defensive penalties and % mental (like illegal formation) vs. physical (like holding). That may help in distinguishing if it's the coach or the player? If we have a real high % of illegal formation or delay of game, it could be the coach. Holding or interference, the players.

Relax, mens, ah love those "dumb" penalties in the preseason. They are the best learning tool around.
Jus ax any NFL coach.

I wasn't referring to the gm vs Oakland. I was referring to our history over the past decade with 3 different coaches.

We beat ourselves more than other teams beat us.

Good point. We have a lot of pre snap penalties, probably near the top in the league

Then ah concurr. Yes, we do beat ourselves frequently. But it is all part of the game. These mistakes will happen no matter what. The frequency is another thing, I do agree.
Now if we could, when the season starts, prevent those "dumb" throws . . . .

Good stuff.

I've looked at it before as well. The penalties have just been horrible since Parcells left. They weren't sterling when he was around but significantly better.

I do not agree with that. Plenty of team beat us on skill. What you said is what the Williams sisters say when they are beaten: "We played poorly" or we "was injured" to minimize the skills of others.

Take it back!
