Cowboys are learning to "Refuse to Lose"

I like quotes like the ones below. I like them because they come from team leaders. I like them because they come from both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. I like them because they are indications that the winning-attitude among the team is getting better. And that's important because this team desperately needs to build its confidence. Winning - even ugly winning like against KC - will help foster that.

Tony Romo on refusing to lose: "We didn’t think about losing. All week, that wasn’t an option," Romo said. "That was the thing I was telling the guys this week was we had to win this game. Period. I told them from Day 1, starting from the beginning of the week, this is it. You need to come out here with the approach that this game is as important as you’ve played in."

Bradie James on refusing to lose: "I know it is going to be y’alls’ job to talk about penalties and what went wrong, but my job is to talk about winning," linebacker Bradie James said. "Because there is always going to be things that happen in a game, penalties, guys not making plays, whatever. So it’s really the attitude of no matter what is going on refusing to lose. And we’re learning to do that."

Saying and doing are two different things. The defense has been folding up shop before the games are over. (Brandon Marshall TD, the TD in the last two minutes last night, Giants game, etc)

The offense is a penalty machine and the defense folds when it matters most.

They haven't learned not to lose just yet. They haven't even learned to play consistent football yet.

Flozell is a penalty machine.

Winning in KC was "doing". You got to give them that. Yes they played poorly at times, but they never gave up and pulled off the win. Gotta give them that, especially if romo's been preaching that all week and the team follwed that lead on gameday.

You mean the TD they gave up in the last two minutes? Or the fact that Austin broke a tackle on a short catch and ran 50 yards afterwards?

I take nothing away from Austin. The man played his butt off and accounted for more than half of the Cowboys total yards. The rest of the offense didn't exactly strike fear into the Chiefs. Hell, the Chiefs didn't have to do much to stop the Cowboys. The Cowboys kept stopping themselves.

The Cowboys won yesterday by the sheer will of Austin. Without him, the Cowboys lose that game.

Psssst, ... your team won, you are allowed to enjoy it for a day or so.

If you can't enjoy it when your team wins, I feel bad for ya.

Were the Cowboys perfect, .. far from it.

But they won and in my years of being a player, coach or fan, .. that is a good thing.

Once again, it was Kansas City. It doesnt take a particuarly strong will to defeat the Chiefs.

Does anyone here actually believe the outcome would have been the same had we been playing even a semi-decent team yesterday? Of course not.

This team showed this a little bit before. I think there used to be a quote in someone's sig from an Atl player who said something to the extent of "you could see it in their eyes, they weren't going to be stopped" after we beat them in 2007. When this team get's going they are able to find that focus and determination. They just gotta figure out how to have that confidence consistantly.

Nice 'rah-rah' speech, but if this is what our QB came out saying all week, why did we come out so sluggish? Which is, for the record, a common theme.

If our team really bought into that, wouldn't we have come out and steam rolled the Chiefs?

I think I can see this team developing the right attitude out of this mess so far. They need to keep it up, it needs to grow and become more of a mental focus.

This team, especially on offense early in the game, was just pressing and it cost them. They said they had a great week of practice and they came out withpenalties caused by just pressing too much. Same with the D, their penalties came in the second half from being too aggressive. Now the offsides were a bit much but those guys were off the ball quick and were really playing hard. It was not for lack of determination, just a bit of lack of execution that costs them the game tying score.

This team has a chance to develope, will they, man I sure hope so!

I don't think they were sluggish. I don't think that is the correct term for their play, Like I said above, they were pressing too much. I felt for the entire game that the Cowboys were going to win. I kept telling my son that. The effort was there, the focus was not.

I guess you turned off the game before OT and failed to witness the Defense step up twice to stop the chiefs including a 3 and out for 2-3 yds on the 50 yd line. That would be a perfect example of folding when the game is on the line huh?

As was mentioned above. They won yesterday despite the problems they caused themselves. I would say that was a step towards learning not to lose...remember, the key point being made is the team is starting to learn how not to lose, not how to win big...that is a topic for later in the season.

A large portion of the 13-3 team is still here. How do you learn to win if you've already won before?

No, I didn't turn off the game, but I did see the defense fold in the last two minutes of the 4thQ that would have made overtime unnecessary.

As was mentioned in another post, this was 0-4 Chiefs team. The Cowboys are 3-2. The three wins are against teams that are 1-14. That one win was the Panthers beating the Commanders who ended the Lions 19 game losing streak.

This team plays like ****. There is no way around that. The fact that they won is good, but by no means impressive. Austin and the rest of the Cowboys should have dominated the Chiefs because they suck. It shouldn't have been close and the Chiefs probably shouldn't have even scored in this game.

Its a good thing Austin didn't need Romo to throw him the ball, or that the OL needed to block to give Romo time to make the pass...oh wait...they did do those things. It is a team sport, and I gaurantee you that on every successful play it takes more than one player to execute to make the play/player succeed.

Why talk about it and just go do it. A win is a win, and I dont care if it was against the chiefs, but do it against the giants and broncos as well. In all honesty this is the only one of those games that you didnt play well to win.

I don't know my crystal ball is broken.

Dallas has played two undefeated teams and the game came down to the last second literally.

Maybe if the Chiefs had been a better team, Dallas plays a better game.

It is a week to week league. Did you see the Eagles and Cardinals playing in the Championship game last year?

But someone stepped up and made a play to seal the game (Romo and Austin, actually).

Look, this team is not going to a Super Bowl this season. All I want from THE PLAYERS is consistent improvement and a building of some winning-confidence. If that can carry them to just one plyoff win this season - even from a wildacrd spot - that will be a huge vidtory because that monkey will be off their back.

At least then when a new coaching regime takes over next season, it will be wooried about furhter developing a team with a solid mental foundation rather than one with a bunch of underachievers. This team has obvious depth issues also, but if they can learn to overcome those - even somewhat - then it will be huge going forward.
