The Cowboys' coaching staff likes Julius Jones' pass-catching ability.

Marion Barber was used more frequently than Jones on passing downs last year and Jones had a career-low nine catches. Dallas is reportedly set on Jones being the starter and may feed him more often this season.

YES! Julius Jones has been underutilized in the passing game for three years! I think he'll be a much bigger threat to opposing teams the more times he gets his hands on the ball! Out of the backfield will create nightmares for teams that's worrying about T.O., Glenn and Witten/Crayton & Co.

I've been saying all along Dallas doesn't get him the ball enough out of the backfield...

JJ is good at catching the short passes out of the backfield. He has gotten better since his rookie year. He had a very high ypc average last season. It will be interesting to see what happens this season.

I hope you're right about his improvement. I can definitely remember several drop out of the backfield. Unitl he proves me wrong, JJ isn't nearly the pass threat that Barber is.

Julius doesn't have great hands. He was definitely better last year. Looked alot smoother catching it out of the backfield.

But in his other two seasons, trying to pass to him ranked right up there with another incompletion. Or he'd catch it, but he spent so much trying to get a handle on it that by the time he caught it, the D has already closed on him.

I can't attest to whether or not BBR is actually watching the games, but if you don't remember JJ dropping any passes....

He was absolutely awful his rookie season. Perhaps a little improved the next season. As for last year...he didn't do it very often. Barber was the man for the job last year.

yea he was good last season....i remember the first game of the season vs Jacksonvile...when he caught that little 30 yard bomb from drew bledsoe...and had to kind of adjust to it...how many backs can do that? with a safety breathing down there neck?

JJ can only get better.....but i see were you are coming from

It'd be a huge bonus if JJ's receiving skills have indeed improved. Having two backs with the threat of catching out of the backfield only bolsters anything Garrett has in store for us this year.

I can not say how many passes he have dropped, but as you can see by the stats we need to give him alot more opportunities until he shows he can't do it. If I'm not mistaking Dallas have never been a big screen team. Wade think he have it in him then they need to implement it alot more than what we have seen over the last three yrs.
Note the red is recieving stats.

And I wouldn't say JuJo is "Good" at catching passes out of the backfield. He simply is NOT good at it. He's average at it. The word "Good" get attached to too many undeserving players these days.

i never thought jj was that bad at catching the ball. neither did i understand why seemingly everyone kept saying last year that barber was the much better pass-catching option -- especially since jj's ypc average is better than barber's.

to me, the REAL significance of this is that wade is saying that he sees julius as a true feature back, and that julius was limited more by the lack of opportunities under parcells than a lack of ability. i mean, he's already commented on jj's INSTINCTS, when that has been a buzz word in the whole debate about parcells overcoaching julius. plus, if jj will get a chance to catch more passes, then that must mean he'll get more third down opportunities in general, and that means more carries over the course of a season.

i know that not everyone here agrees, but the point is, it looks like julius is going to get the chance to be "the guy" this year. hopefully, the offense will be so good that barber will get plenty of touches, too!

Look, either way we need a setback, ANYBACK, that can catch the football out of the backfield to keep defenses honest. Simple as that. Teams need to fear the pass out of the back field so the pass-rushers can't go straight to their passrushing moves; Our line has a better chance if the opposing D-lineman first worry about the back running out of the backfield after catching the ball.
