Filed to ESPN: Cowboys signed Wade Phillips to three-year contract extension through 2012. Picked up option year and tacked on two more. 3 minutes ago from web

Yay.

I very happy for Wade, I think he has earned that. I know some will be upset but regardless if it is a 3 or 10 year contract that does not ensure Wade job is somehow protected. He and this team still have to go out and win if he expects to be the coach for the next 3 years.

The one thing the 3 year deal does is takes allot of the media question of his job out of the picture which would not have been the case had Jerry just picked up the option year, the media would be constantly hounding the team with Wade future as a lame duck coach.

I'm not much on Wade but there isn't a thing that I can do about it but deal with it.

I do wish that Jerry would have exercised the option and waited awhile before handing out the extension though.I would rather see Wade get the extension after getting off to a good start in 2010 than right now.Maybe doing that would be unrealistice but it would make me feel better about the extension.

I wonder how much money Jerry will have to eat of that extension if Wade get's blown out in the playoffs again? I'm not saying a close loss but a loss by 30+ in the WC round.

I think coaches contracts should always be done in the off season get rid of any of the media distraction heading into camp. The question is now laid to rest. In the end though he has to win to stay unlike players there is no cap regarding coaches if Wade fails next season then 3 year deal or not will not matter.

I'm in full agreement with you on this one.

Wade did a fine job this year and earned the extension.

That said, with the money he has, Jerry's not locked into the deal if things go badly.

With this deal done, I'm wondering if any changes to the coaching staff will happen, specifically regarding Hudson Houck?

You have a valid point.I would just rather see Wade on edge a little longer.

Good question. Hard to say who may come courting certain coaches. As for Houck I have less of an issue with him than many. It should be interesting to see what changes may take place with the staff if at all.

I really do not think Wade lays up at night in fear of his job. He has been in this business a long time he knows job security be it a 1 year deal or 5 year deal is one losing season away from getting canned. I do think he was not acting when he has told reporters that is not something he thinks about allot

I would bet you can count on absolutely nothing happening.

Maybe. It is hard to say if someone will be looking at assistant coaches as they put together their staff.

Wade is the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys; he is ALWAYS under fire. If we fail to get past the divisional round, Wade will probably be gone next year.

The staff is already set and under contract with the exception of Jr. Phillips, Nguyen and Brett Maxie. Unless he feels like paying someone after terminating them, you can count on all of them returning. Continuity reigns.

You're likely right, but I would take a look and decide whether Houck is still the right man for the job or if he "retired and didn't tell anybody".

Yes they have a contract but if a team offers a higher position than the one they currently hold then are they not free interview for a job? Not saying this to be a smart ars but was under the impression if you had the oppertunity to move up then a coach could leave?

According to NFL.com's Jason LaCanfora, the Cowboys have signed Wade Phillips to an extension through 2012 after all. ESPN's Adam Schefter has seconded the report.

The Cowboys announced the move on their own website Tuesday before retracting the story and issuing a denial. Owner Jerry Jones confirmed earlier in the week that he had at least picked up the 2010 option on Phillips' contract. The team is expected to announce the new deal at Thursday's press conference.

Who is leaving? According to the last few things I read, all are expected to be retained, even Nguyen who some people believed was going to USC. You know Phillips' son is not going to go elsewhere. As for Maxie, I could care less.

The only move we "need" to make is Houck. If it is not him, you might as well just keep the rest. Replacing any of the others is not going to make much of an impact. I do know our OL has to improve. More of the same is not going to help this team advance.

I would think a 1 yr deal with 2 yr option is clearly preferable for JJ.

Of course for Wade, it would not be as good as an outright 3 yr deal.

For the Dallas Cowboys, it probably doesn't matter either way. If Wade had a 3 yr deal, and he didn't do well after 1 year, he's gone anyway.

Cowboys give Phillips a three-year deal

Posted by Mike Florio on January 21, 2010 12:18 PM ET
The Dallas Cowboys held an option on Wade Phillips' contract for 2010.

As expected, owner Jerry Jones has decided to pick up the option.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN and Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, Jones also has added two years to the deal.

So it's a three-year contract (or a two-year extension), which puts Phillips under contract through 2012.

And, as we mentioned a little bit ago, the devil will be in the details. For example, the final year of the new contract might also be an option year, which would allow the Cowboys to walk away with no financial obligation.

Regardless, Wade will be back next year.

And Giants, Commanders, and Eagles fans suddenly feel a little bit better about their day.

I've lost all respect for Florio. He's a complete *****.
