I played a game of draft speed chess, and asked my analysts for reflexive reviews of players on Dallas' pre-draft invitee list. We've covered some of the bigger 1st round subjects in depth. Here are some lesser discussed options, according to TD.
Cowboys Nation: Give me a quick review of the players on this list. Let's skip over Warmack, Cooper and Vaccaro, and D.J. Fluker. They're going in the 1st round and we've talked about them a lot. Let's move to 2nd round guys and later.
TD: Okay.
CN: What of Eric Reid?
TD: I've seen him ranked as low as 60 on some teams' boards, late 2nd round. But he's got good instincts. When he gets his wheels turning he can track the football pretty well. He's a bit high-cut, so he's going to struggle to redirect at times in the deep half. But he can tackle; he's a striker. I feel better with him as a strong safety, but one who can hold his own in the middle. I don't like him in the deep half as a free safety. I think he can win for you in man as a strong safety and win near the line of scrimmage.
CN: We have not talked about 4-3 linebackers much this year so we have not discussed any of these guys. Start with U.Conn's Sio Moore.
TD: He's a striker, with good range. He can go sideline-to-sideline. He was asked to make a lot of tackles on that team. When you play on a defense like that you can have a tendency to wear down a bit. The guy can run a bit. I wouldn't say he's fluid but he can well enough to cover in the deep half if he has to. And he'll strike you as a tackler.
CN: The offensive lineman Travis Frederick from Wisconsin. Mid-round guy?
TD: He's one of those guys who you like when you watch him on tape because he plays in tighter quarters, then you see him at the Senior Bowl, and at the Combine and you think, "this is not a good-looking athlete." But he understands angles, he plays the game hard and he wears people out. He's not the most natural athlete and he's not a bender, but he can gain leverage, he's got powerful hands and he works hard.
