Interesting player to use the designated to return distinction on, let's hope a contributor doesn't get hurt in the next couple weeks.
.

I was thinking the same thing. Didn't imagine using the exception for a marginal player. Strange. Hope it doesn't come back to bite us. I guess they were thinking they need to use it before it's useless later in the season.

Next warm body up.

Gonna have to sign guys off the street: What about trading for somebody like Da'Quan Bowers from Tampa Bay orJeremy MIncey from Jax? What about a guy like Andre Carter, 34 but as a backup?

The guy has 5 tackles in 6 games. He was supposed to be some special teams ace but the special teams are doing well without him. Don't know why they just didn't IR him. He won't be back until the 15th game of the year. Although going forward from this stage of the season, anyone who gets a major injury here on out is likely going on IR anyway. Having to sit out 8 games takes you to the end of the season. Still seems like a waste using it on some marginal player like Jones unless the KC trade had some conditions.

This is pretty amazing. I don't think I've ever seen a team have so many injuries at one position group in a season. If we can sustain some type of respectable pass rush this coaching staff will deserve an award.

Pretty soon Stephen Jones might have to suit up. How can a team sustain so many injures and still field a defensive team. Kudos to Kiffin for trying to manage this mess.

We will need all the help we can get as we enter the playoffs. :D

So when can we expect the nfl to expand either the 53 man roster or the practice squad. Seems like every year guys are pulled off the couch to fill roster spots.

Literally just got off a call with my uncle. We both felt like the ticker on nfl network is basically a WebMD Wikipedia of nfl injuries.

He said he thinks Demarco Murray will miss more games in 3 seasons than Emmitt & Dorsett did their entire careers combined. Now obviously he was kind of being sarcastic but it's almost true.

I think you point about 15th game of the year is your answer. Use the designation or loose it.

same as years past. We did not just lose Lee last year we lost Carter then we lost backups. It seems each year some position is ravaged by injury not spread around to different positions

We were down to our 4th C by week one last season. We were also popping in couch-Safeties like they were disposable batteries in the weak-flashlight that was our pass defense last season.

At ILB, we had Carter, Lee, Lemon, and McSurdy on reserve. And Sims missed some time. We were giving reps to Brady Popinga.
We were down Church, Johnson, and Scandrick in the secondary by season-end. Giving reps to Michael Coe, Eric Frampton, Sterlin Moore, and Charlie Peprah. It was pretty bad.

A friend told me that the good news is that all these new guys will have really fresh legs and no tape for the other team to scout!! It was lighthearted humor but true.

I think you answered your own question. Due to the 8-week time frame, the IR-return designation will be worthless soon.

In 2012 weren't Costa, Kos, Bern, Nagy, and Arkin all considered before we traded for Cook?

Costa, Kowalski and Nagy were all out. Bernadeau was injured for most of training camp and they needed him at RG. Arkin played Center in TC but was terrible.
