Yesterday I authored a thread entitled, "Cowboys' Future Looks Mighty Fine." It was an optimistic piece about the bright future of our team, but today I digress just a little bit by talking not about a bright future, but a somewhat shaded present.

What do you think will be the collective response from this team after so many diversions/changes?

I tend to be a fundemental believer in "change inspires when inspiration is lacking" even when the electrons(-) outnumber the protons(+) and you end up with a negatively charged, ionic compound. That was way over the top. Point is, Romo showing his desire to lead this team despite his broken finger, the long list of injuries altogether, losing 2 of the last 3, Pacman's suspension, the acquisition of RW2...all of these changes/factors are highly significant, and despite their collectively negative charge I think this could have a very positive effect on the mentality of this team. (Note the term "mentality," not subject to any inference that they are by any means, nor altogether, better off.)

This is the sole scientific instance where the heart and brain can be joined as a single operative organ where the burning-heart-of-fire molds into will...an inspired mentality. I've almost forgotton what this looks like from the 'Boys.

Maybe we should rub opposing WRs down with electrons and our CBs down with protons so they'll stick to one another and be forced to play man defense.

Instead, such influences may set the stage for one of those miraculous, physiological events where the heart and brain join together as a single operative organ in which the burning-heart-of-fire molds into will...an inspired mentality. I've almost forgotten what this looks like from the 'Boys.

Here's where I take a risk - my apologies ahead of time. I've been pretty aggravated for the past 3 weeks for the very reason mentioned above, and I've been very critical of Wade as a result. Don't worry; I'm not one of those "let's-fire-him-midseason" guys, but at the very least I do argue for a slight shift in his coaching philosophy - just enough to spark the fires within this team and contribute to a winner's mentality; just gimme SOMETHING to work with!

In my opinion, the ability to motivate and inspire should always be a prerequisite to any head coaching job. Like a secretarial job interview where the interviewee's resume is clearly impressive and well-aligned with the required job-functions, but she fails to type the required 50 words per minute. In reasonable context, the ability to meet this standard of efficiency may be just as important to ensuring the success of her employer's daily course of business as it is for a head coach's ability to collectively inspire, motivate, and instill a team focus in promoting success for the organization he seeks to represent - a particular reference to those things that don't show up on a resume but must, nevertheless, be demonstrated as a prerequisite.

In the case of hiring a head coach, an evaluation of this sort isn't as objective as it would be for the secretary whose assessment would be based on quantitative analysis - a skills test. Instead, personality indicators might provide the primary source of a subjective determination. Then maybe an inference could be drawn between a coach's easy-going, care-free attitude and his list of perennial underachievement’s and his winless playoff record!!!

Wade's a nice guy, but we all know what they say about nice guys. Additionally, I am not a Wade-hater, but I am a law student; and as such, I become easily absorbed in an obsession to seek resolutions to what I characterize as problems. In so concluding, a Head Coach's attitude, intensity, urgency, and all other synonymous terms are elements of a contagious mentality where players are concerned, in much the same way that the intensity - or lack thereof - of every one of your boss's at your places of work is contagious to you and all of your co-workers. Don't underestimate its significance. In this context, inspiration doesn't burn forever in individuals with too much agency, and agency is dictated by one person - "The Man", the boss, the Head Coach...Wade Phillips.

The secretary analogy reminds me of a hiring panel I sat on once.

Three candidates for a job come in.

Candidate one types 85 word per minute with no errors, but she doesn't take short hand

Candidate two takes short hand but types only 45 word per minute with three errors.

Candidate three types 55 words per minute, with no errors and takes short hand.

Which would you hire?

The answer depends more on the needs of your organization and the specific position being filled. Which is more important, typing fast, typing accurately, or taking short hand? Very few executives dictate anymore, but some old dinosaurs still do. Error free typing, however slow, reduces work time from eliminating the need to retype the document.

It all boils down to what you need at the time.

In my case, I always hire the one with the biggest boobs.

Ah, but don't you see how this *also* causes a drop in productivity?

In this context, self-motivated fires of inspiration are of limited extent in individuals of whom are provided boundless scopes of agency; such agency is dictated by one person - "The Man", the boss, the Head Coach...Wade Phillips.
