We have to be pretty happy about the future of this team regardless of the present turmoil.

Sure with the Roy Williams trade we sacrificed a 1st, 3rd and 6th; but, we got a player that - if his ultimate caliber could have been anticipated in 2003's draft - would have been taken #1 by any team that had the slightest need for an extra weapon. Now, our need for a great WR is satisfied very efficiently when you consider the gamble it takes to draft a WR with a high pick, and the time it generally takes for them to develop IF they're going to AT ALL.

Aside from developing the Romo-to-Williams relationship, there will be no waiting on development of the WR himself. We have essentially leap-frogged a couple of frustrating seasons of the waiting, waiting, and waiting that we've experienced with Crayton, Austin, and Hurd. We are now set for the future with impact players at positions that have a more direct influence on the outcome of a game - QB, RB (Lord can I say RB!!!), TE, and now WR. Count the NFL teams that can say the same.

Further, for me, the Pacman suspension is bitter-sweet. We've lost him for a 4-game minimum where a return is certainly not out of the question, but more importantly, we've retained two picks from Tennessee as a result. Granted they are late-rounders at 5 and 6, but they help account for the 9 picks total that we STILL have for the 2009 Draft. And although the bulk of these picks are in the later rounds, this shouldn't be discouraging simply because, in general, you usually reserve the 1st/2nd round picks for drafting players at high-impact positions that we are now ALREADY SET WITH!!! Again, generally speaking.

9 picks ranging from the 2nd round to the 7th leaves Jerry the opportunity to select players that correspond to our needs in the part of the draft where these players generally wouldn't be selected until anyway - players to solidify the line of scrimmage, perhaps more secondary help (if T-New is as chronic as I think he is and if Pacman never returns), but especially additions to the linebacking corps, which should be a high priority.

I really like the position in which Jerry has put this team. I don't care what these pompous BSPN analysts say. So, let's reignite this season and add to our fine collection of chrome-glowing furnishings! If not, fire Wade, and get ready for next year ;)

What I like is that next offseason we can avoid all the talk for sexy "wow" players and focus on getting the not-so-sexy, get-your-nose-dirty guys at positions like DE, NT, ILB, OLB, SS and OL. I think just about all our picks and any free agent dollars we spent should be spent on those positions.

100% agreed. It seems that's about all that's left. Another thing I like about drafting for those positions is that, as long as you don't overrate a Barbie-Carpenter caliber player upon making a selection, you can get immediate impacts from them.

This is the point I was making a few days ago ....

QB Tony Romo 28 years old...
WR Roy Williams 26 years old...
WR Patrick Crayton 29 years old...
TE Jason Witten 26 years old...
TE Martellus Bennett 21 years old...
RB Marion Barber 25 years old...
RB Felix Jones 21 years old...
RB Tashard Choice 23 years old...
WR Miles Austin 24 years old...
WR Sam Hurd 23 years old...

LB/DE DeMarcus Ware 26 years old...
LB/DE Anthony Spencer 24 years old...
LB Kevin Burnett 25 years old...
DT/DE Jay Ratliff 27 years old...
DE Marcus Spears 25 years old...
DE Chris Canty 25 years old...
DT Tank Johnson 26 years old...
FS Ken Hamlin 27 years old...
SS Roy Williams 28 years old...
CB Mike Jenkins 23 years old...
CB Orlando Scandrick 21 years old...

K Nick Folk 23 years old...

Lots of youthful talent on this team.

And only Adams on our O-line is older than 30.

Well all of our linemen are 30, and by next year each one will be older than 30 and that is a situation, in my opinion that needs to be taken care of. You can't go into the season, with each five of your starting linemen over 30 years old and not have any young back-ups with the talent to step in.

Just my opinion.

That's a great list but I would add CB. After TNew, Jenkins and Scandrick it looks thin next year. Yes that means I am not counting on Henry or Adams being back there.

Absolutely excellent point. Jerry has set this team up to a point to where he can now focus on going and getting the often overlooked, and not nearly as important to some people, positions in the draft that need depth and upgrades.

For all the crying about Jerry and how bad he is he's done a very nice job of setting his team up to be very good for years to come. Of course even if we do well and win a couple of Superbowls over the next few years those same people still won't give him any credit, they'll just continue to harp on any mistake he makes along the way.

That's great info. It's so fortunate to have so much talent mixed with so much youth. Another response from your post up above, made a good point about the O-line needing more depth, which is definitely true. Same with the D-line and especially the LB corps. Not quite as worried just yet about the secondary...it seems easy to jump the gun on screaming for secondary help when you've got Roy Williams, Terrence Newman, and Pacman out of the line-up. Scandrick and Jenkins are very promising, still a ways to go in their development of course, but I think we should be content at this point considering the fact that 3 starters are out comprising 1/3 of the DB's on the roster. This is kind of a TBD for me. I would prioritize LB at the top of the offseason's pursuit. Use the 2nd round and 3rd for this, and then work on the line of scrimmage in the following rounds. Just a rough idea.

Agreed I just hope address OL before SS it seems to be more pressing to me cause our backups don't amount to a lump of crap!!!!!!!11

I agree ..... I wish we had some great looking young guys to throw in there.

But Last year the average age of the Probowl O-line was 32 years old.

Only 4 guys out of 21 were under 30 years of age

Tackle Marcus McNiell - 24
Tackle Jammal Brown - 27
Guard Shawn Andrews - 25
Center Nick Hardwick - 27

So that means the average age of the Pro-Bowl offensive linemen was the age of our oldest one.

So all in all I think we have a pretty young line.
