Cowboys Future

Projecting the futures in an eternal optimistic sales promotion in the manner Jerry projects to generate interest and sales is not my duty as a fan.

The prior results also gives us something to go on.

I’m about critiquing what we’ve seen not what we hope to see.
Does not part of critiquing what you've seen include what they are doing to fix it or improve on it? I would say that with going on 25 years without a championship you would have to include that also

If we are able to build that kind of D and Dak is able to drive the bus, i am more than ok with that. I just don't think we can win if we have to rely on Dak to do it. For all of his faults and he had a few, i never thought we were out of a game that Romo played in. I never get that feeling with Dak and our offence (at least after last season), but i am willing to give him his 3rd year to really see who he becomes and unless he gets injured early this season, my mind will be made up about Dak (one way or the other) after this season
There inlies my concerns. We’ve become emotionally attached to a QB we aren’t relying on carrying us and or winning games for us.

All of a sudden we’re attempting to take the pressure off of Dak to win. Do we really believe we’d become as attached to Dak without his Rookie winning wave?

Care to present who at present, present as candidates for the DT #1 position for Dallas. This could well be the shaping factor for just how intensive this defense becomes in this season.
Antuan Woods, Brian Price and Malik Collins

I think Price is going to be a pleasant surprise

Exactly

You can but again until they succeed it’s just hopeful aspirations.

I like what Garrett’s doing within his limits under Jerry but ultimately he’s going to be measured by the success of the team.

That's not a bad point to make, imho. He was extremely inconsistent with a perfectly good foot. With WRs, a compromised foot can be a killer. His IQ is justifiably in question, also. I wouldn't be crushed if the FO decided to let him go. Of course, Jerry and JG might have other ideas, however. Then, there's the 3.5 mil savings to consider as well. Anything can happen. How he performs in TC and preseason could easily be a factor in deciding his fate.

Williams is probably lucky he is starting off the season injured. I think his chances of sticking are better if he is hurt.

Do you think we’re close to a Raven type defense?

No. Not yet. But we are probably a real live top 10 defense now, which we haven't smelled in many years.

We are probably a pocket collapsing DT away from being a Ravens defense and maybe a safety, although I'm a lot higher on Heath than many are. Heath should be playing FS with his speed. Frazier or Woods can battle for the other spot with Frazier getting the nod on running downs.

To me Prescott makes or breaks the future.

If he's the Prescott of 2016 and the first half of 2017 then this team is in decent shape.

If he's the Prescott of the last half of 2017 then the Cowboys are going to need a new QB.

For the record I think Prescott will do just fine, but it's far from a sure thing.

Great post.

I think we can survive this one more year from TWill

He is a valuable security blanket type for Dak

AHurns- Gallup- TWill- Beasley- DThompson- (NBrown/CWilson)

That either/or dilemma with Brown/Wilson is exactly why I agree with @xwalker on Terrance Williams. I don’t want to risk a young talent to keep Williams around for another year when I think everyone would prefer to move on.

I certainly hope so but it’s yet to be seen .

That was my thoughts originally but with the broken foot and drunken video I wouldn't mind just moving on.

That’s where I’m at as well. He had enough ups and downs before that, but now it’s strikes two and three for me. And given the number of new faces and young guys now on the roster, there’s no more room at the inn for me.

I don’t want to lose Noah Brown or Wilson because we were “stuck” with a screwup like Williams for one more season.

I may be wrong about this, but I don't think they will keep williams if he isn't one of the best receivers on the team. They won't keep him ONLY because of contract. They may start him out on PUP. That's probably the most likely scenario.

I sure hope so. I’d hate for his contract situation to cost us a potential young talent for the future.

Agree. If not for the other players, I would not care if TWill stays one more year; however, I don't want to lose any player due to keeping TW for one more season.

I've never been a TW hater like many people but I think at least one of the young players will be able to provide similar or better performance than TW.

I'm considering Hurns as #1 to being 2018.

That leaves TW competing with these players at #2 outside WR:
Gallup - More talent than TW.
Wilson - Already impressing in practice.
Thompson - Veteran similar to Butler talent wise.
Brown - The coaches last year liked him.
Lenoir - Some coaches appearently like him.

If Butler was not a knucklehead and if he didn't have some injury issues last season, he could have beat out TW as the #2 WR. Butler has better hands and is faster. They had the same 65% catch rate but Butler's were higher degree of difficulty catches.

I agree with all you've said here and I'd add yet another "strike" against Williams. At this point in his career, I think he is what he is and I personally don't see much room for improvement. Especially considering that he's likely to most most, if not all of the team's offseason work.

If nothing else, I see potential upside in young players like Brown, Gallup, and Wilson that I don't see in Williams.

Add that to his laundry list of issues and it's easy for me to think that they should pull the plug. If not in a trade as you mentioned, just simply move the necessary money around to allow you to take the cap hit to release him. Or just PUP/IR him for the season so he doesn't negatively impact your 53-man roster.

I'm done.

We shall see. If our young rookie WRs display the skills in TC and the preseason games that they're reputed to have, it's entirely possible that an important decision regarding T-Will could be pending when the final cuts are made. A trade might even be an option as well if a suitor can be found.

IF the Cowboys really wants to get rid of Williams, or think the young guys are better, they have the cap space to simply bite the bullet and cut him. One thing I haven't seen discussed in this thread is that if he gets suspended (I don't think it's going to happen) his guarantees are null and void. He can simply be cut with no consequences if it happens before the 1st game.

If he's suspended after the 1st game, which rule overrides the other? 1. vets salaries are guaranteed if they're on the roster for the 1st game, or 2. Suspensions wipe out guaranteed money? I don't know the answer to that.

Swapping a 6th for a 7th to gain 3.5M in cap space and real money is not a bad deal.
This is very similar, in principle, to the Texans giving Brock Osweiller and a 2nd rounder to the Browns a couple of years ago. In return, Browns assumed Osweiller's $16M contract.
