So the top three guys should essentially be starters day one and that gets an F?

If you ignore needs and look at just the players we got it's a solid draft, but when you consider our needs and whether or not our team got better it was not a good draft

Nope, it just filled different needs.

You can't grade a draft until 3-4 years down the road. Simple as that.

I remember reading some article not too long ago that took the last ten drafts, the letter grades associated with them and what the true result was. Essentially, the margin of error was so huge that there was absolutely no difference between a team drafting an 'A' draft vs. a 'F' draft.

I read this part of it...

"Escobar was a fine pick, but then Williams and Wilcox are two guys who might not play for two years."

And the author lost what little credibility he had with me.

Luckily I could less what writers grades are, I wasn't too happy with the picks but after reading about the players I like what we did, I think all these players will make contributions this year.

I think we got better on offense, but not so much on defense. And of course there's the issue of the offensive line. We're not done yet, though. How much better will you all feel if we acquire a veteran lineman or two?

Whether you consider them needs or not, our offense on paper got a lot better.

I think we got better on both.

The way we drafted on offense signals a change in scheme. We bolstered the middle and got bigger targets that can win in the 10-15 yard range and the redzone.

The change in scheme in and of itself makes the defense better. Ratliff has played out of position his whole career and is a natural 3T.

The scheme plays to both Lee and Carter's strengths.

We also added new players in the back 7 that all will help some on defense and a lot on ST.

Nice...

What I think is that posters don't realize that the whole scheme is changing, not just the defense switching to the 4-3.

New coaches every where has to make some difference from what we have been seeing.

However, some posters cannot look to the future, they just wallow in the past.

I'd give the Boys a C.

But Cole's aim was true when he labeled Williams a "luxury."
Through the Jimma era, he got along fine with Irvin as his receiving centerpiece.
Now jerra has Dez, Miles and Witten and despite all the critical needs elsewhere, he goes and picks a WR who may or may not make a dent.

Truly a luxury that will cost us.

With our shaky D, we'd better get better on offense. And quick.

Here's Cole's review of Seattle's 2012 draft:

Seattle Seahawks
Picks: OLB Bruce Irvin, ILB Bobby Wagner, QB Russell Wilson, RB Robert Turbin, DT Jaye Howard, LB Korey Toomer, CB Jeremy Lane, SS Winston Guy Jr., DT J.R. Sweezy, DE Greg Scruggs
Grade: D-
Analysis: I have a great deal of respect for the work of John Schneider, but I don't understand this draft. Of eight teams (five of which drafted after the Seahawks) that were surveyed, none graded Irvin as a first-round pick. Yes, he has talent, and he could become great. He also might be a guy who burns out in two years because there are plenty of people who question his dedication. After that, the Seahawks spent a third-round pick on Wilson even though the history of QBs under 6-foot is poor, to say the least. You don't spend a third-round pick on a guy who'll be lucky to be Seneca Wallace. You also don't do that after signing Matt Flynn as a free agent. The Seahawks are no closer to solving the QB situation now than they were before 2011.

(This actually means our 2013 draft was awesome.)

You have not seen the D yet. Did you buy one of them fake crystal balls somewhere in Farmer's Branch?

With Austin's injury history, Williams is anything but a luxury. What do have after that, besides Dez? Harris? Not bad. Beasley? Okay, but limited. Coale? Unknown. We have a good receiving core, but nobody to stretch the field. Austin used to be that, but not anymore. Dez can beat you deep, but you're not going to send down the field consistently.
