...2014: Zack Martin, DeMarcus Lawrence, Anthony Hitchens – This front office picked Martin over Manziel, that appears to be a pretty smart move, drafted Lawrence, who has shown flashes and Hitch, a mainstay at linebacker since he’s come aboard.

2015: Byron Jones, Chaz Green, Damien Wilson, Geoff Swaim – Jones is already a very good player, with a chance to be playing in multiple Pro Bowls, while Green might be the starting right tackle and Wilson might be starting at outside linebacker (something that might have occurred in 2016 without an odd paintball accident). Swaim, meanwhile, has also become an integral part of the running game.

2016: Ezekiel Elliott, Jaylon Smith, Maliek Collins, Charles Tapper, Dak Prescott, Anthony Brown, Kavon Frazier, Rico Gathers – This list is pretty self-explanatory. There are Pro Bowlers, stars and key contributors from this draft, and we haven’t even talked about the potential of Smith and possibly Uncle Rico. This was an outstanding haul from the front office in last year’s draft.

There are a lot of Pro Bowlers, stars, future stars and big-time players for the Cowboys that have been drafted since Jason Garrett arrived, especially since McClay has taken a larger role. Of course there have been some swing and misses (cough-cough Gavin Escobar), but that happens, drafting isn’t an exact science. For the most part, though, this regime has done a very good job of building through the draft and finding the right players, even when fans felt it was the wrong pick (cough-cough Travis Frederick). So if you feel that Taco Charlton was the wrong decision, be patient, let’s see what happens. The Dallas Cowboys coaches and scouts have earned the benefit of the doubt, especially over the last few drafts.

I think Dallas is top 5 drafting teams now. They are certainly in upper tier. They are so confident in their drafting prowess that team was only ones not over-reacting about losing most of DB field. Will McClay now does victory tours. All I know is this feels so much better to be ahead of curve and start replacing players before they break down.

They have become a good drafting team, but it has not translated to playoff success. And without winning in the playoffs, it doesn't matter.

This has to be the year. The team cannot go one and done again this year. The pressure is on.

Man, get over being a cryin' fan when the team is without doubt, progressing on a top level...that, or hire a baby sitter. (over 18)

They have completely earned mine.

I hated the Frederick pick.. I thought it was poor value and his footwork at Wisconsin looked non-existent to me. Well not only was I wrong but Frederick is probably the best center in the league.

They just keep hitting.

If Jaylon fully recovers and plays up to the level he is capable of then I don't know how you could say that 2016 wasn't possibly the best draft ever.

Just remember there was a time recently when the criticism was we couldn't get over .500. That already seems like a problem from a long time ago.

The NFL is about finding and developing talent. Build a competence there, and you can build a contender, period.

1. Yes they have earned my trust, fwiw.
2. Is JFF going to be brought up till the end of time? I mean there was a rumor about JFF, and if true only Jerry wanted him.
3. Lawrence has been a disappointment up till now. Mulitple injuries, suspension and constant flipping of sides(maybe not entirely his fault).
4. Green has done well in a pinch, but has been Matt Johnson the rest of the time. Wilson has done well in limited play. But not necessarily a hit per say.
5. Smith, Frazier and Gathers are TBD. Obviously not counting them out, but not anointing them either.
6. I do agree about being patient in regards to the 2017 class.
7. That 2016 class could be elite

I am not ready to totally trust yet. Last year was amazing, but the prior years were good, not great. This years draftees are critical to me. If more than two of these guys are starters, I'll be a believer. If not, I'll still be a bit skeptical and think last year's draft was a fluke.

Yes, I agree. Jerry just sits in his "Big Chief" chair and smiles for the cameras. McClay just feeds the answers and Stephen makes the call.
What's not to like.

If a team picks the player who proves that he was the best available in each round, then it has my draft trust. Since no team does that, then I'll go on hoping that my team got it right but not necessarily believing it until I see it.

I don't like this concept of draft trust because drafting is a flawed process. Let's take Charlton as an example. If he works out to be one of the best DEs in this draft, everyone will be happy with the Cowboys, but if both Takkarist McKinley and Chalrton had been available, we might have taken McKinley instead. It's educated luck of the draw.

Last year, if we could have worked it out, we'd have Lynch or Cook on our roster as a quarterback instead of Prescott. How much trust should we put into that? You end up with what you end up with because of the way the draft falls and you just hope the draft falls right for your team. We'll find out in a few months if it did for us this year.

Wow.. so does this mean we are finally giving Jerry and Jason some credit.. or are we just leaving them there to take the blame for any/everything that goes wrong, and leaving the credit for Stephen and Will

Clearly they had been improving over the previous 15-20 years.
Last year however when I thought for sure we would trade up and get a blue-chip quarterback, but no, instead We Take a Over rated running back, (I thought at the time) and then we take a loser in the fourth round and Proclaim we have a quarterback?

Moral of the story?

Yes the Cowboys are doing much better drafting and

I still suck

As you were

they have averaged 1 probowler per year - that puts them in the top 5 probably.
they have made great use of the 1st round pick - so there is hope in taco.

2014 yielded 1 probowler and i doubt anyone else gets a second contract.
2015 has not yielded a probowler but jone is a starter. swaim and wilson are decent, but not sure either gets a 2nd contract due to FO's ways to save $. collins is a gift not drafted.
2016 is historic and could be the best draft in the history of the NFL for any team if jaylon is fully recovered.

Who's crying? You want to see crying? Check out the threads after the loss to Green Bay.
And those threads will repeat themselves if they go one and done again.

I like the direction the team is going. I like how they are drafting. I like how they no longer pay for age. I like the continuity at the coaching and executive levels. Talent level is getting better as the team gets younger. I like how they are looking for playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.

There is lots to like.

Now they have to turn it into playoff wins. That's all I'm saying.

It has taken a while, but yes they have gotten better. That should be obvious to anyone who has been around for a while.

Only thing I don't like is all the 'openness'. Almost cocky, we still haven't won anything yet we are bragging about draft success and how we do this, that, and the other. Meanwhile the Emperor just gives you a dumb look, and all we see is smoke and mirrors while collecting rings.

I know as fans its fun to know everything thats going on in this new social media environment, but I'm sorry........I think it sucks.

For some reason, that sounds a ton better...I like what they are doing also. No foul...no harm. I'm looking forward to this next week and the developing of the Cowboys' players. That is a ton for this fan to look forward to...

I agree. At some point this all-time great offensive line has got to do more than just what is expected - and expected is playing at a high level. I would hate to have wasted the potential of this group. And you need only look at the Hogs, the Raiders offensive line of the 70s and the Giants offensive lines of the 80s to see that an offensive line can put you over the top.

Yea, with the league's leading rusher and Rookie of the Year, quarterback...one should expect a lot higher standard...right?
