agreed, but they're in a pickle with $12+ mil in dead cap money at risk. They found themselves a few years ago in a similar situation with Free where they were able to renegotiate his way high contract after a terrible season, would like the same result. With that, can't see how they get away renegotiating less than $8M area and is still more than what I expect Murray to ever be offered.

They can free up 8M in 2015 by making Carr a June 1st cut. They can sign another CB for a cap hit of less than 8M.

Which corner will they sign under 8 mill?

Antonio Cromartie just finished a 1 year deal for 3.5 and Brandon Browner signed a 3 year deal for 15 million last season. There should be good cbs out there for affordable deals. Cromartie has actually showed interest in Dallas.

Not really upgrades or solutions

saving $5-8 mil and getting the same quality play is a huge upgrade and solution.

Imagine the D-line that money could help build...which would make an equal corner look even better than carr.

Like that thinking. It's about the team, and not just one person. Hopefully Carr see's the value in doing a Free type deal to stay with a team that is on the rise, as I don't think any other " contender" will see him as an upgrade.

If I was Carr's camp I would just tell the cowboys no. If Carr gets cut he will probably be one of the better corners available and there are a ton of teams looking to upgrade the position.

I don't think he will be one of the better corners available if he was cut. There are other better corners out there that we can sign thats cheaper. Heck, Carr is almost getting much as Revis and has not produced one INT this entire year. If he doesn't take what we give him he should be cut. We can find someone much better than him at a lower cost.

I'm not paying Carr 8m no matter what. I would go 4-5m max, so you would have to get someone for the vet minimum to save 4m. If you pay Cromartie 3-4m you really aren't saving anything and may or may not have gotten better.

I'm not against drafting a CB at 27, but I would still want Carr for another year with Claiborne's health questions and Moore's overall ability.

Right on, but you can't spend that money until June 2nd. Getting a 50% pay cut would be just as effective and the saving would count right away. Everyone knows Carr has some talent, he would benefit just as much from a better pass rush as a new CB would.

Sign Greg Hardy and draft a DT early and with Crawford, Mincey and DLaw that looks pretty good.

Hard to think we would pay him 10 million in any form and stiff Murray with less....

Yep. I'm not worried about our corners. Scandrick isn't elite but he's one of the better starting CBs in the league. And he's versatile because he can play the slot too. Moore is a solid #4 corner but you're in trouble if he's your starter. Carr is a solid starting CB and played much better at the end of the season. And if Marinelli continues to have them play man coverage like they did later in the season, Carr and even Claiborne can be solid players.

Give us Seattle's safeties and front 7 and people wouldn't be complaining about our CBs. And we have 5 very good LBers. The problem is, we rarely have more than 2 of them healthy at the same time. But our main issue on defense is our D-line and a lack of a play making safety.

I have to agree with you. I think our CBs and LBers are our strengths on defense. I really hope we bring back all 3 free agent LBers, keep Carr and get Claiborne healthy again. Those areas are not a weakness so let's not make them a weakness by getting rid of guys. But D-line is a big weakness. I agree we have to make a splash in free agency and go D-line early and often in the draft.

Flower and A. Cromartie both played on 1 year deals for about 3.5M in 2014. Most people would say that they were both better than Carr.

If they wanted to sign a player to a multi-year contract then the 2015 cap hit could be significantly lower than the actual average annual salary.

Some names that have been mentioned:
Buster Skrine 26
Davon House 26

Kareem Jackson 27
Byron Maxwell 27
Chris Culliver 27

Walter Thurmond 28
Perrish Cox 28
Darius Butler 29
Brandon Flowers 29
Antonio Cromartie 31
Tramon Williams 32

I see several guys there that would be better and cheaper than Carr (even at a reduced salary of say $5 mil per season).

Would you try to sign someone first and then cut Carr or would you June 1st cut Carr immediately and roll the dice? Remember when thought Carr was the answer to our CB problems, the grass isn't always greener.
