Great. Thanks. So there are options for spreading out the unavoidable cap hit, but we're talking basically about incremental salary of the vet minimum (or whatever he's willing to take) plus an additional $4M of charges for future years, v. the cost of eating the 10 mil over two years plus whatever his replacement would cost. Is that it?
That's exactly it. I think we can cut him in June shift the cost over two years, sign a different veteran tackle to 2 or 3 year deal, draft another tackle in the next 2-3 years, and end up with a ++ situation, especially given the cap.
I should have mentioned that cutting Free saves us 11 million in year 3, and 9 million in year 4 (this being year 1).
That is huge cap savings.
There are a great number of players who won't be on our roster 3 years from now.
Jay Ratliff will probably be in his last year here. If he has a pro bowl year, we might be able to find someone to give us a pick for him. Cutting him June of next year will cost us 2.73 million, which is an overall savings of 5.5 million dollars next year, and a savings of 5.536 million the year after that, 8.23 million the year after that, and 10.7 million the year after that. Pretty significant cap savings. The issue is replacing him. Hopefully Crawford can be that replacement.
People might not like the sound of this, but Jason Witten is also going to start getting quite expensive. His cap hit looks to cost about 8.5 million a year for each of the next 4 years. I think it'll be difficult to warrant paying him that much. We might restructure him a couple more times.
We're actually in quite a bit of trouble with DeMarcus Ware's contract. We've really screwed the pooch with this one. Either he is going to have to really excel in the 4-3 and be a 20+ sack guy year in and year out, or we're going to have to dump that contract. He costs us 16 million next year. I don't think we can restructure him again.
I think Austin's days are numbered. Maybe we restructure him if he plays really well next year, my bet though is that we try to trade him.
The last troubling contract is Orlando Scandrick, and he is almost definitely in his last year here, so there isn't too much to worry about in that regard.
