He's not a fit at OG.

I think the team would prefer DF just take a pay cut and become the swing OT. Failing that, they're going to have to release him, take the cap hit, and then replace him on the roster.

It sounds like the Chargers are interested in bringing McKinnie in. I was just wondering if we took the chance to float a rumor to reinforce the point that there are potentially cheaper options out there for us than Clabo.

4 million a year (at the vet minimum) is a pretty steep cap hit for a swing tackle, who probably isn't much better if at all than Parnell.

I think we have a few options out there at tackle, but we don't want to overpay for anything, nor do we probably want to invest any long term contracts into anyone.

If we get a cheap enough upgrade at tackle, maybe at some point during camp we bring in Moore if the competition at guard isn't good enough.

My dream line for this season would be

Smith - Livings/Leary - Frederick - Moore - Winston

Seems to me the plan is to find a veteran on the cheap to backup Parnell, whether that's Free at a reduced contract or a FA like McKinnie. I think we would've signed Clabo/Winston by now if the staff wanted to sign a FA starter.

Think about that logically. So do you think NO one is going to sign Clabo and Winston to start. Couldn't someone say that of every team that hasn't sign them... Where is the logic in that?

What's the incremental cost for keeping him on the roster v. cutting him outright?

It's all just window dressing, they're not going to sign any new offensive linemen unless Free leaves...

Cut him today and he costs 10.02 million dollars against the cap, which equals his 2013 cap hit. So there is no increased cost. We would save 11.02 million dollars next year.

Cut him June 1st, and he will cost 3.02 million this year, which saves us 7 million this year, but will cost us 7 million next year, which will save us a total of 4 million dollars.

If he took the veteran minimum this year and next year, he would cost 3.75 million dollars this year, which is a savings of 6.25 million this year, and 7.25 million next year, but we would still be on the hook for the rest of his money in future years. About 4 million dollars in signing bonus still on the books.

When I clicked on this thread, I assumed there would be people salivating over signing him.

I didn't imagine someone would actually suggest this, though.

Congrats.

You lowered the bar beyond my wildest imaginations.

I award you two innerwebs.

And yet that "Bar" is higher than the performance of our entire O-line..

*Ring* *Ring* I got Romo on the blower for you mate....:D

RT @RavensInsider: Bryant McKinnie update, per source, offers from Chargers, Dolphins; Cowboys have made inquiry about left tackle as well.

“@JD_Cloud_: Bryant McKinnie seems to be doing the rounds as a potential Cowboys target. Who's better fit - McKinnie or Clabo?” Clabo.

Cowboys entering the Bryant McKinnie mix, as Dolphins and Chargers have offers on table http://wp.me/p14QSB-8D2t

.@OnPointNY @polo_prince20 Betcha by the time we get to June 2 we'll learn #Cowboys have 'touched base' w ALL OTs. As they should
So, does anyone care to hazard a guess as to what they would do with him? Is he RT material, or does this mean yet another position switch for Tyron Smith? If the latter, I'd pass.

Great. Thanks. So there are options for spreading out the unavoidable cap hit, but we're talking basically about incremental salary of the vet minimum (or whatever he's willing to take) plus an additional $4M of charges for future years, v. the cost of eating the 10 mil over two years plus whatever his replacement would cost. Is that it?

Oh dear God no! I do not want McKinnie in here. I'd rather have the Parnell/Free rotation. I'd like to get Clabo(at the right price) since I think he is an upgrade over Free as a transitional guy so we can hopefully draft/RFA the next Smith for RT.

I believe you are using the spotrac numbers and I'm pretty sure they screwed up on that one after the Cowboys restructured his contract. They tacked on extra years and more money than the original 4yr 32 which doesn't make sense from the Cowboys and was never announced from what I know.

That's exactly it. I think we can cut him in June shift the cost over two years, sign a different veteran tackle to 2 or 3 year deal, draft another tackle in the next 2-3 years, and end up with a ++ situation, especially given the cap.

I should have mentioned that cutting Free saves us 11 million in year 3, and 9 million in year 4 (this being year 1).

That is huge cap savings.

There are a great number of players who won't be on our roster 3 years from now.

Jay Ratliff will probably be in his last year here. If he has a pro bowl year, we might be able to find someone to give us a pick for him. Cutting him June of next year will cost us 2.73 million, which is an overall savings of 5.5 million dollars next year, and a savings of 5.536 million the year after that, 8.23 million the year after that, and 10.7 million the year after that. Pretty significant cap savings. The issue is replacing him. Hopefully Crawford can be that replacement.

People might not like the sound of this, but Jason Witten is also going to start getting quite expensive. His cap hit looks to cost about 8.5 million a year for each of the next 4 years. I think it'll be difficult to warrant paying him that much. We might restructure him a couple more times.

We're actually in quite a bit of trouble with DeMarcus Ware's contract. We've really screwed the pooch with this one. Either he is going to have to really excel in the 4-3 and be a 20+ sack guy year in and year out, or we're going to have to dump that contract. He costs us 16 million next year. I don't think we can restructure him again.

I think Austin's days are numbered. Maybe we restructure him if he plays really well next year, my bet though is that we try to trade him.

The last troubling contract is Orlando Scandrick, and he is almost definitely in his last year here, so there isn't too much to worry about in that regard.

You're right. It does look as though they messed up.

Pass on McKinnie. He is the epitome of lazy.

He worked his butt off when inserted in Baltimore's lineup. I suspect that has a lot to do with the Miami connection with Ed Reed, Ray Lewis.

I have little doubt he will return to his lazy, uninspiring ways next year.

Of course, we all recognize his name.

So of course, he'd be a great fit.

Sign him Jerry!
