Cowboys have requested to interview Demarcus Covington for DC

Well at least we are doing an intensive search. Not just 1 or 2 guys. I would hope we would at least get to interview Brian Flores and Jim Schwartz at least to see what they think of our current guys and figure out what went wrong this season.
Its unlikely Schwartz will be available to even interview. At least before the end of this month. Cleveland has to let him go before he can be interviewed

Flores is an interesting case. He can be interviewed and is doing one DC interview, but as far as hiring him you have to wait until the HC vacancies he is interviewing for are filled. So waiting for him is a risk

My guess is Leonhard is there guy with the Parker as their backup and Gannon as the wild card

damn, how will they remember what each say in the interview,,,

It is like when I did interviews for articled students at my law office, by the end of 10, I was like who said what,,,
Need to keep better notes. :muttley:

But I know what you mean.

wouldnt it be wild if after all these interviews, whitecotton gets the gig?
They may be setting the table for just that. This is all for appearances so they can say they were diligent when in fact they knew who they wanted on day one amd its probably going to be underwhelming.

Considering how well the Adams hire was, I think taking the same approach for DC is worth considering.

But this forum seems to want an experienced DC with extensive accomplishments but also be under 50. Those guys are HC candidates. You’re going to either get former HCs or young guys who might be future HCs. Dallas has tried the latter since Wade fired Brian Stewart.

I think it’s Covington v Leonard with Gannon & Whitecotton as fallbacks

Rooney Rule. Leonhard has the job unless Jerry does what Jerry Dumbo GM has done for the last 30 years (not have a HC choose his staff). They interviewed Bullen that was on the 2023 Illinois staff as a LB coach with Leonhard. So that would be your LB coach ex the fired Eberflus.

Leonhard has ties to Shooty, and is a Rex Ryan and Van Joseph disciple. Shotty wanted Leonhard last year.
Leonhard also played for a year in Balt with harbaugh as head coach. i wonder if he tries to get him

Don't know much about this guy. Is he decent?
From his time at Pats...

DeMarcus Covington's defensive scheme is not a radical departure but a continuation of the core New England Patriots defensive philosophy that emphasizes physicality, discipline, fundamentals, and attacking the football. He believes in a flexible system and does not adhere strictly to a single alignment (like a pure 3-4 or 4-3), focusing instead on technique and versatility.

Core Philosophy
Covington's philosophy centers on a few key principles:
  • Physicality: His defenses are designed to be a physical, tough-minded unit that controls the line of scrimmage.
  • Fundamentals and Discipline: He places a high value on proper technique and discipline, ensuring players understand their assignments.
  • Attacking the Football: A key objective is to generate turnovers by actively attacking the ball.
  • Versatility: The scheme incorporates different looks and alignments (e.g., using both 3-4 and 4-3 principles) to match up with various offenses, a trademark of the Bill Belichick coaching tree he comes from.

Key Insights
  • Foundation: Having been with the Patriots since 2017 and serving as the defensive line coach for several years, Covington built upon the existing solid foundation of the New England defense rather than implementing wholesale changes.
  • Defensive Line Focus: Given his background as a defensive line coach, he focuses heavily on the front seven's ability to generate pressure and stop the run, leading units that have ranked highly in rushing defense and pressure rates. He identifies three essentials for generating pressure: the start, the fight zone, and the finish.
  • Teaching Approach: He is known for his hands-on, teaching-first approach, often getting on the grass to demonstrate techniques to his players.
