The NFL continued its dominance in television ratings last season. NBC’s Sunday Night Football was the most-watched programming in American television for the sixth straight year, tying American Idol for the most consecutive years atop the charts (since 1950).
Sunday Night Football’s streak began in the 2011-12 television season. American Idol accomplished the feat from 2005-06 through 2010-2011. The ratings, compiled by The Nielsen Company, are based on ‘live-plus-same day data’.
Sunday Night Football was previously tied for second place at 5 consecutive seasons with The Cosby Show (1985-86 through 1989-90) and All in the Family (1971-72 through 1975-1976).
The Cowboys played four times last season on Sunday night, including back-to-back weeks in December when the Bucs-Cowboys game was flexed to prime time in favor of the originally scheduled Bengals/Steelers matchup in Week 15. Four appearances on NBC’s SNF is the maximum allowed per team in the regular season...
