Cowboys Insider: A surprising standout on the defensive line

A surprising name emerged recently for one Dallas Cowboys insider while watching the Cowboys defensive line during the first two days of training camp.

Dallas Cowboys training camp just started on Saturday. And being that the first two days of practices have been without pads makes the weekend more like a glorified OTA session than the start of camp.
Nonetheless, when a insider like DallasCowboys.com football analyst Bryan Broaddus takes notice of a particular player, fans should take note and listen. And that’s the case when it comes to s surprising standout the former NFL scout spotted in the middle of Dallas’ defensive line over the past two days. That being veteran defensive tackle Terrell McClain.

“The current rotation along the defensive line has McClain running with the ones and Cedric Thornton as the backup nose tackle,” Broaddus wrote on the team’s official website. “If you ask me who has been the most impressive of the defensive linemen in through these first two days – McClain would be my guy. I have really liked what I have seen him getting off the ball and up the field. There have been some snaps where he has been difficult to handle..”

This is an interesting tidbit of insider information here. Most believe it would be the free agent out of Philadelphia, Thornton, who had the inside track on starting at the one technique beside Tyrone Crawford on the interior of the Cowboys D-line. The fact McClain is starting ahead of him is a big indicator that the Cowboys staff think very highly of the former third round pick.

Coming out of South Florida in 2011, where McClain recorded 24 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss and 3.0 sacks in his senior year, the undersized 6-2, 302 pound defensive tackle was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.

But the Panthers gave up on McClain after only one season in which the young defensive tackle was described as being absolutely abysmal against the run. After short stints with the New England Patriots and the Houston Texans, the defender signed as a free agent with the Cowboys in March of 2014...

You know who else had a pretty good day today in pads was Darius Jackson, the 6th round RB and I've heard it more than once that they think he's a player.

Could spell trouble for D Mac.

McFadden earned a status with Dallas...unless someone comes shopping with another defensive lineman or safety.

Ultimately, you have to wonder if there will be enough room for all of these guys? There's at least one position where we not only have enough depth, but maybe too much.

And McFadden doesn't mary up as well as to strongest style of blocking for this offensive line. One time, where depth is top notched, and perhaps a tad over-kill as you stated.

And that lack of being an ideal fit for the zone-blocking scheme may be the difference between him staying or not.

Stash, that's a good question...but he did produce last season, and that usually instills a little loyalty towards a player. Trade, maybe?

It will all work out before the final cut. RB's get dinged and at least one will be hurt before the season.
Right now, just let them all compete and see who emerges from the Pre-season. Cream, if there is any,
will rise to the top. There's always the practice squad too!

Hopefully. It would be nice to be able to trade away for something at a position where we actually look to have a surplus of talent. I can think of a few other spits where we could use some help.

Well....wait what?

I hear you, but Broadus does know quite a bit about football and has been around the Cowboys. He does still have socially redeemable features for a Cowboys fan.
