Your right. But thats not Ware's fault that he didn't want to take a paycut. Jerry needs to learn to stop giving out these crazy deals that we can't pay. A contract is a contract. Revisionist history? Tell that to Jerry.

yea, and no player under contract ever held out.

at the time it wasn't a crazy deal but ware just started falling apart and being MIA around the QB. was jones supposed to tell ware "hey, in 2013, you're gonna not be as productive" and include that into the deal?

i do think jones gives out some stupid contracts. but many to most teams do in order to protect the productive players. will they continue to be productive is the gamble.

Are the Pats just as bad for asking Wilfolk to take a paycut?

If we get Peppers on a 1 year deal worth no more than 5 or 6 million and get Melton cheaper than what Hatcher signed for, I wouldn't complain about that.

In Ware's contract his 2014 and later salaries were placeholders to add years. His previous base salaries were all 6M of less. It jumped to 12.25M in 2014.

Making the base salaries in the later years of a contract is a method to extend the contract over multiple years to spread out cap hit of the bonus money. They make it a really big number to get the player to agree to it but the team is not planning on paying that amount at the time of the original contract.

Technically, Ware wouldn't have taken a pay cut if they had paid him 6M this year. If he has not made over 6M in past years, it's not really a "pay cut" to play for 6M again. It's just not as much as the placeholder number that was in the contract.

I wouldn't either. Would be nice to see a batted down football once in awhile as well with Peppers on the line. I swear I haven't seen our Dlines in 10 years bat down a dang ball.

Melton I am not as enthusiastic about, only because I want Donald bad. We could get Melton and then Donald fall in our laps at 16 and could see us thinking we are set instead of getting more pass rushers. That's the way we think around here.

the real question is: are the pats going to make the stupid mistake of just releasing Wilfork "so that he can get a fair chance to sign somewhere"?

repeat after me: Team before player

smart teams make smart moves, stupid teams make stupid ones

The Ware contract wasn't "crazy". When you have the best pass rusher in the league and his contract is up you have to pay him.

See I'd be ok with Melton, Peppers or Allen in any combination as long as the price is right. This team needs to find stop gaps while trying to rebuild this dline.

One day it looks like we're interested in rebuilding within the framework of a "youth movement." The next day, we're 'interested' in a 34-year old DE who is entrenched on the downside of his career. Well, he had seven sacks last year, so I guess it's hard to sneeze at that, even if he's not what he once was. The Bears released him to save themselves from a $14 mil contractual agreement. I'm betting Peppers will seek considerably more than the Cowboys are willing or able to pay. Due diligence? Guess so.

I don't think that they can afford both Melton and Peppers. Moreover, I don't see the relevance of Peppers beyond probably giving Garrett enough rope to "do something" with once again. If the Cowboys are looking at long term then Peppers makes little sense other than to put more ticket holders in the seats this year. The Cowboys are not one 34-35 year old defensive end away from a SuperBowl...playoffs even.

I'd take Melton and peppers. Then draft bpa. Either dt de or Martin from Nd. Then go more dline in round 2-3.
Agreed.

Nice lookin' dog. Is that Sean Lee or D. D. Lewis? Doesn't look old enough to be Jerry Tubbs.

I would take a lineup of

Peppers/ Melton/Crawford/Selvie

While drafting ..Donald/Barr/Ford/Jernigan

Not if Ware returns to form, no. But you could easily turn out to be correct. There are several variables at play. What kind of player is Melton off the injury? When does Hatcher hit the wall? Does Peppers have anything left?

And now Jared Allen's name is bouncing around here.

Call me crazy, but did Dallas play this right? Instead of setting the market, have they waited until the money dried up to sweep in for bargains on useful veterans with pedigree?

Julius Peppers will sell jerseys. People hear the name and instantly think back to the beast mode player he used to be and not the complete shell of himself he is now.

Insert Ware, and you can post the same thing.

Just save cap money and rebuild the damn Defense through the draft. PLEASE! Julius Peppers, Henry Melton or Jarred Allen are not going to produce anymore wins for this Defense than any rookie's will. All they will be doing is preventing young guys from receiving valuable playing time.

As said numerous times, THIS TEAM IS NOT 1 OR 2 PLAYERS AWAY FROM A SUPER BOWL.

Just for shiggles....

We could have got Michael Johnson and Jairus Byrd for the money we saved on Ware. Young players and improvements.

Johnson got a 5 yr 43.75m deal. He is guaranteed 16m over the first two years and can guarantee another 2m in the second year and 5m in the third year. Those are the key features of the deal. We could have given him a 12.5m signing bonus and guaranteed salaries of 1m, 5m and 5m and matched the guaranteed money with a first year cap hit of 3.5m. Our deal would have given him 12.5m right now(compared to 4m now). At the end of year one he would have collected 13.5m from us compared to 9m from TB. At the end of year 2 he would have collected 18.5m from us compared to 18m from TB, so every financial aspect of the deal favors the Dallas deal and I would argue we are more of a competitor than Tampa is.

Byrd's deal has a 3.5m first year hit as currently constructed.

So for 7m in cap space, and a net of about 6m(rule of 51), we could have got two players in their prime for less money than we gained from cutting Ware.

How would that make everyone here feel? Would you feel better about the process going forward?
