This is how the Joneses typically like to operate in contract negotiations. They want to wait until there is some perceived deadline to motivate each side to get a deal done. They used to do this with draft picks as well, waiting until right before camp to strike deals, but the rookie pay structure has done away with the need for that.

If not for the surgery, I doubt that a deal would get done until June or even close to the franchise tag deadline July 15.

His surgery has a 8-12 week recovery time. 4-6 weeks for healing and another 4-6 weeks to get it strengthened back up.

This is getting close to it threatening his ability to perform in camp.
