According to a source, the Cowboys also met with Eastern Illinois’ Jimmy Garoppolo and San Jose State’s David Fales at the combine.

While Garoppolo’s status is rising -- Bill Polian sees him as a first rounder -- he could be on the Cowboys’ radar in the second or third rounds. The Eastern Illinois tie with Tony Romo is intriguing. Both players won the Walter Payton Award as seniors. Garoppolo threw for more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in 2013.

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline believes that Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo has solidified himself as a second-round pick.
"Jimmy Garoppolo/QB/Eastern Illinois, who solidified himself as a second rounder last week and already has five pre-draft visits with NFL teams on his schedule, will participate in Northwestern’s pro-day next week," Pauline wrote on Thursday. The small-school prospect has gained some momentum the last couple of months, with a strong outing in the East-West Shrine game and the Senior Bowl. Garoppolo's performance at last weekend's Combine could have some evaluators changing their minds. Feb 27 - 3:50 PM

Great guy for Romo to groom. They are similiar types of players in my opinion. I wouldn't mind this one bit.

just on name alone I want nothing to do with Fales.........................though if we draft him and he wins a Super Bowl, the headline would be a great oxymoron.............Fales Succeeds.

You can sign me up for Garoppolo. I believe in him. Not in the first though.

I think we would have to take Garoppolo in the 2nd at this point and that's just not an option for me. After Romo gets restructured this year it all but guarantees him for another 3 years. Even if everything worked out perfectly and Garoppolo was ready to take over we would be faced with the decision of resigning him after only 1 year of play. Just not the year to take a QB high.

Reports were that the Cowboys were seriously considering Andy Dalton in the 2nd a few years back. There are more questions about Romo now with his age and injuries, so it wouldn't completely surprise me if they went QB in the 2nd round. But I think the more likely approach will be to take a Murray or a Fales in the 4th-5th round this year.

I think Garoppolo goes before our second round pick. Where is Fales projected in the draft btw?

3-UDFA. He needs to go to a certain team to be successful. I think DAL would be a great spot for him.

I understand what you're saying about Romo with his contract, but I'm still worried about his back, and how much more mileage he has. He might get 3-4 more good years out of it, or he might only get one.

If Romo only plays 1 more year at a high level and he remains under the same contract we are pretty much screwed anyway. Drafting a QB in the 2nd round because you are worried about Romo is like doomsday prepping for a nuke....

Yeah, but if we don't prepare for it, then we'll end up possibly being screwed for years, like we were after Aikman.

Murray :(...

I'm good with Garoppolo in the second, though I'd prefer Murray in the 4th/5th. Garoppolo is the next Kaepernick (draft v. production wise) while Murray is the next Foles (again, draft v. production wise). Although, I'd take Foles over Kaepernick 7/7 days. #draftmurray #please #thankyou
