I'm not, nor are any of us making $3 million a season for our offensive strategies but is what written below out to lunch for this team offensively for next season?
Can't see how we don't pound the rock and get the ball in Felix Jones hands through the air more. Force safeties to come up to the line instead of roaming over top of the bump coverage. Then get T.O and RW11 1 on 1 with some corners. Witten and Bennett are always going to get their intermediate opportunities against LB's and having them both out there in at least half the sets catching and blocking makes it so possible to initiate balance.
I like Cricket and understand how the FB played a huge role in our 90's Cowboys offenses but I don't see how we have been more successful than not when operating packages that utilized a FB the last 2 years. I think the FB in our offense is completely expendable. Witten is already as capable a blocker at his position and Bennett will get better at it also.
I think we should showcase 2 RB's and 2 TE sets at least 66.666% of our plays. 3 WR + sets 33.333% of the time. More 3 WR sets with Austin in there when we have 2nd and shorts because that's when we can afford to take shots deep and miss. 3rd and 4-5's (2) TE's more often than not because we can both run and pass unexpectingly in those situations. 3rd and 6-10's 3 WR's with Crayton in. 3rd and 11+ 3 WR's with Austin in as apposed to Crayton. Obviously change it up a bit so you're not totally scripted but this should be the base. This will create more familiarity and comfort for the players which ultimately creates good execution.
How many teams defensively can match up with us if we fundamentally approach these situations like this? Especially with an effective running game that can move the ball within and outside the tackles as well catch the ball out of the backfield and gash you for a big play or 2 a game in that regard. When play action is a possibility. When your QB's ability to run the ball 3 decent times a game when he has space comes back into play.
Your LB's have their hands full with 2 very good pass catching TE's who can also isolate you on runs. When your safeties have to come down because they are forced to tackle either a bull runner (Barber) or a shifty back like Felix because everyone else is busy tryig to man their task. Choice is effective at both of course. What happens with corners who consistently have to go 1 on 1 with T.O and RW11 with minimal safety help because the run, flat passes and intermediate routes are always being exposed due to the offensive talent having capable weapons to beat 1 on 1's there.
Teams raher get burned intermediate than deep but not when Felix catches one out of the backfield and takes it deep anyways. Not when Bennett gets into the backfield when the corners and safeties are sucked into double covering T.O, RW11 and Witten. Teams will have to go 1 on 1 on every level eventually if Garrett puts fundamental balance in place, adapts quickly to the defenses counters and utilizes what the defense gives him to expose. This will change many times throughout a game and the players also have to be mentally prepared and accepting of this. Their # may not get called up when 5 other have till the late 3rd quarter.
Garrett needs to make then confident and mentally strong in that regard offensively. There is so much talent offensively no one's production other than Romo can't be reasonably replaced. That even goes for Witten if Bennett can stay focused. There are no problems with Witten crying though. He is the best TE in the game and if he has to ask to be more of a part there is something crazy going on. The WR's you're always going to get that even if they catch 90 passes in the season.
